To the Wonder - Malick

Getting panned at RT.

"...an incoherent exercise in directorial egotism."

"Insufferable in almost every way."

"The characters have little substance or development. The dialogue is minimal and deliberately semi-audible."

"The fact that there is very little in the way of plot and dialogue means that you spend the best part of two hours looking at pretty pictures."

"Arguably Terrence Malick's most Malick-y film to date, at times To The Wonder feels like a Malick parody. Visually, it's absolutely stunning, but the 'story' is abstract even by his standards."

And a positive endorsement/warning...

"Frankly, a bad Terrence Malick film is better than 90 percent of movies released in cinemas: but if you thought The Tree of Life was indulgent and overly kaleidoscopic, you should avoid this like the plague."

It looks even more nonsensical than Tree of Life. It doesn't shock me at all that it is. It shocks me that so many critics are catching on to the bull shite that he's been shoveling out over the years. What a pretentious ass. He and PTA can return to art school and teach, please.

I just can't get in to Malick. I know what he's trying to do, and I know it all looks beautiful. But it is always just an insufferable bore.

Cannot wait.

ETA:

Has a 42% right now.

quote:

Maybe what Malick is working toward is a film in which he can leave out the actors altogether. He's getting pretty close.

quote:

At times, the new film plays like a Wayans brothers parody of a late Malick picture: Sleepy Movie, Floaty Movie, Preachy Movie.
quote:

If To the Wonder is the kind of film we get when Malick is prolific, I'd rather he took another ten or twenty years off.

quote:

Chris Stuckmann
Moviedex
To the Wonder plays like a nature documentary featuring famous actors who wander into the shot from time to time.

quote:

You have to accept Malick on his own terms, and for those who do, To The Wonder will feel like a tall pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea on a hot summer's day: glistening, sweet and restorative.

I could handle TOL. It was fascinating. But I'm not watching a movie any more abstract than that.

This film is more linear than TOL.

I don't consider Malick abstract. He's more of a visual poet (good or bad however you look at it). Guy's like Shuji Terayama or Stan Brakhage, now those guys are abstract

re: To the Wonder - Malick
Wow...his final review...didn't know that...thanks for the link. Ebert really liked Malick and as noted earlier, he listed Tree of Life in his last Sight & Sound critics poll Top 10 all-time.

I'm sure I'll see the film - sometime, somewhere - maybe later - if not at least because of his last review...Ebert - due to age and illness - he had at least some perspective and wisdom that comes through in his reviews.

It could have been a lot worse, his last review could have been Scary Movie 5.

Love the trailer for this film. I'm a huge Malick fan. I can really zone out to his movies and just listen to the scores.
