Tommy Lee Jones winning for The Fugitive over Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Goeth.

Roger Deakins is nominated for a 13th time this year (and Leo fans whine about him getting nominated a lot but not winning ). Looks like Deakins will lose again. There's no way he shouldn't have won at least one by now. Guy is a living legend. He has a masterful eye that leads to some truly breathtaking shots.

Looking back, it's hard to believe that Toy Story and Toy Story 2 didn't get much love at all. There wasn't an animated feature category, but both of those films deserved a best picture nod IMO. Toy Story 2 was a much better film than Gladiator. I have a hard time picking out 5 movies better than Toy Story and Toy Story 2 from those years.

What other ones can y'all think of?

I'm glad other people recognize that Leo was not the one that was robbed that year.

This year,

One of those black people guys prolly should have won something.

Will Smith was legendary in that one movie.

Is there a "right" though? The Oscars are all about Hollywood patting Hollywood on the back and nothing more.

It's not like one collective hive mind decides on something.

Yeah, I hesitate to call it wrong most of the time. I think the biggest thing is whether the award is justifiable. If it is, then it is as right as an arbitrary award can be.

I will say, I would like it if the Oscars gave Best Picture this year to The Martian, just because it is a smart, big budget film aimed at adults. And we don't get enough movies like that. The Martian is a movie that answers the question: why go to the theater? But if another movie wins, which it will, I don't think it's wrong per se.

I do think this decade is headed down the path of the 80s and could be remembered as the worst Best Picture decade ever. The Academy just has no idea what it wants to honor. Look at the winners so far:

2010: One of THE great years in film with multiple terrific options, and they go with a historical biopic. The King's Speech isn't a bad film, but it beat out a stacked field of great films.

2011: A terrible year of films, so they just honored themselves. The Artist is a movie about how great movies are, but it's not particularly good or memorable. It should be a contender for worst winner ever in a few years, but at least it beat a middling field (and if they were gonna give it to a foreign film, A Separation is actually a great film made by a great director)

2012: Well, they gave Best Director to Life of Pi, so it could've been worse. Argo is a good movie, though its another movie about how great movies are. And the field was much stronger this year.

2013: 12 Years of Slave was a total no brainer. There was no chance it wasn't winning. I actually preferred American Hustle (and Nebraska, but that kind of movie has no chance in hell), but this was an easy win.

2014: A strong field with no one great film left itself open to second guessing. Birdman is yet another movie talking about the power of movies... we get it at already. I thought it was the weaker of the power of artists movies that year behind Whiplash, and I'm disappointed an ambitious project like Boyhood did not win. Justifiable win, but only if you think Boyhood is aimless.

The winners this decade have all been fairly pedestrian. I'm willing to bet only 12 Years a Slave has a long shelf life. This year's winner will likely be like 2012's. A good film from a deep field lacking a great film (only there is one, but Mad Max is NOT winning Best Picture)

I never knew this. That's unreal. The two roles don't even compare

Why people have a personal stake in an event that amounts to a megomanical celeb circle jerk is beyond me.

This is a good point, though i thought of the same thing as the other guy, enough with the "Oscar's got it wrong" already, what one's do we agree with

And the Martian wouldn't even be in my top 5 of the nominees. Which just goes to show that it's hard to get them "right" when there is technically no right or wrong answer. Although there are some definite head scratchers in the past

Out of all the movies that get overrated on the MTV board this one wins far and away.

i'm relieved most of the board doesn't feel this way. Saving Private Ryan is beyond overrated by some people. Outside of the incredible landing sequence, the rest of the movie was flat out average. I'm beginning to think people who say Shakespeare in Love winning was some travesty haven't even seen it.
