Saw it for the first time start to finish last night… holy shite...I was stunned. I still think No Country For Old Men was justified in winning Best Picture for 2007… but man this was Anderson's masterpiece.

The one thing I did find distracting though was Paul Dano. He got absolutely blown off the screen in the final scene and is such a weaselly, meek actor, I thought he was totally miscast and unlikeable. But to be fair, everyone in the movie basically was unlikeable, I think that was kind of the point.

I do wonder though, was Plainview simply evil, or was he just not loved and all his misery came from that? There are like 2 or 3 slight little glimpses of his humanity. They only last a couple seconds but Day-Lewis is so good it actually came across and resonated. I think he genuinely wanted to be good, but just couldn't do it.

What I got from Plainview is that he was just an absolute monster of a competitor. I don't think he was evil he may have just become miserable and cynical from the stress of always striving to be the best. Even though he used the boy as leverage to expand at first I do think he cared for him, but when the boy became a competitor in the industry years later Plainview's true competitive nature won out over his love for the boy.

One of my favorite movies.

Plainview showed some humanity with his "brother" and actually told him why he was the way he was. The final 30 minutes were fricking awsome.

It's crazy that one year produced the two best films so far this century.

I love There Will Be Blood.

I think Plainview ended up who he was as a combined result of his level of drive just plain being alienating in multiple ways and because no one ever loved him (partially as a result of his drive). We saw he was human from his relationship with his "brother", but then his "brother" was actually a huge betrayal, reinforcing Daniel's isolation and confiming his cynicism.

I found No Country to be a far more entertaining movie. I thought There Will Be Blood was plodding,over-hyped, and just "OK". I usually keep that opinion quiet because of the enormous "love" people have for it.
Different strokes...

I disagree.....I thought Dano was great....

Dano was originally cast to play 1 of the brothers (not the preacher), but PTA was obsessed with his skill and basically changed up the story and made them twins and cast Dano as both on the fly....Dano had a very short time to prepare for the preacher role, which I thought was fantastic...

It's not fair to compare many to DDL bc he is a powerhouse, but Dano was very solid and held his own

One of my favorite movies! I never saw Plainview as evil, more a product of his upbringing and environment. That plus being a fierce competitor wanting no one else to succeed. And like someone above said, the betrayal of the man pretending to be his brother totally reinforced all of that..

There Will Be Blood is my favorite movie of all time. I've seen it 6 or 7 times now and it never gets old.

Daniel Plainview is the penultimate businessman. The dude lived in a shanty to pour all of his time and money into drilling. He passed up a quick $1 million from Standard Oil because hit wasn't about the money. It was about building something.

I'm all for people having and expressing their opinions, but these kinds of threads help me identify posters who's cinematic views I should flat ignore. No offense Tampa and Leon!

Sorry to be that guy, but this bothers me. Penultimate means second to last. It does not mean very ultimate. Nor is it just a fancy way to use ultimate. People look silly when they use fancy words incorrectly, and it's hard to take the rest of what they say seriously. Don't be that guy.

There's a difference between saying that you didn't care for a movie like No Country and saying that it's one of the worst that you have ever seen. One is valid. The other is pretty close to objectively absurd.

One of the best movies ever made, I thought Dano was absolutely perfect for the role.
