I really enjoy watching this movie. I think it gets better each time.
Is Daniel Plainview's story supposed to be looked at as tragic? Sorta like a Darth Vader. Or is he an inherently twisted/evil man - sorta like the Joker? Just interested in hearing people's thoughts.
Also what makes him suspicious of his fake brother? It seems like the turning point was when he was not enthuastic about the childhood house.
Fire away.

I tried watching this once but got distracted easily. Is it worth trying to watch it again?

I think so. I didn't get it the first time I watched it.

Him not being able to answer or connect events from their home area. That with the fact Daniel was a decent judge of character which added to the success he had.
I think he was a cutthroat man who had good intentions, but his view on the world with a combination of alcoholism and emptyness made him a bitter man who pushed everyone away. His life was a successful tragedy.

That man was a cold, ruthless businessman.

He was suspicious of everyone. He wasn't really a people person.

1 of my favorite 2 movies ever. Plainview reminds me of my dad, minus the money.
Here's my take on Plainview, and one of the reasons it's among my favorite movies. I think you can view him as a compassionate character. He starts out with a small business. A partner dies with a young child and he raises it as his own. ***SPOILERS***
Despite what he later tells his son, about him just being a cute face he used to get contracts, he wasn't on that level when he first took him in. He loved his son. He wasn't good at showing it. Life went on to make him bitter. He blamed himself for HW going deaf. He had to send him away because A) He didn't feel like he could help him and B) He couldn't stand to look at him knowing that he was somewhat responsible. He was able to block the pain out because his "brother" had just come into his life. But you could see the hate and pain in his eyes when he said "IVE ABANDONED MY BOY". He didn't mind saying any of the other things, but that cut him.
The fact that his "brother" got over on him ruined him a bit. He hated people like never before after that. And obviously it's not hard to skip ahead so far in years as they do and see that HW going through teen and young adult years, leaving Daniel for his wife and own business, Daniel was all alone. It fricked him up.
Movie is brilliant. I think possibly the best line in the movie, that gets overlooked in Daniel's character study is when he says "I have a competition in me". That was it. His competitiveness was everything. Good and bad.

This board either loves the movie or DDL's performance. I have watched it multiple times and other than DDL's depiction of an arse-hole, I don't get the love.

From a plot standpoint, the movie is a riff on Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Now, Bogey suddenly goes mad in that film, so they don't really do that with Plainview - he goes mad slowly, with the help of alcohol.
It's a story of hard work, ruthless opportunism and alcoholism, wrapped up in a decreasingly sympathetic package.
Another contrast the movie illustrates is greed - Plainview is generally honest about his greed (as much as he can be and get the rubes to sign) - while the preacher twin's is subtle and couched in the religious context. The preacher twin is only honest when he has no other choice.

I think this is my favorite movie for a number of reasons with Daniel Day Lewis' performance the first one. Also the score / music and how the first 10 or so minutes of the movie has no dialogue. The era in which it is set is one of my favorites in history and it centering around the birth of the oilfield adds to it for me. Such a dark mood to the movie, it has always stuck with me. To me this movie and No Country for Old Men coming out the same year will always make me remember that year as one of my favorites.

I tried telling my wife this when I COULDN'T NOT watch it back when it was on HBO. Every time it came on I had to watch. She thought I was nuts but it never became boring or old to me.

Good point. 13 minutes before a word is spoken.
I think it's so appealing because of Plainiew's transformation. With his fake brother that was the one instance he let his guard down momentarily. Once he realizes his error he kicks into high gear.

Is Daniel Day-Lewis the greatest actor of the last 25 years?
He makes average movies good (Gangs of New York), and good movies great (There Will Be Blood).
I'd put him ahead of anyone for the last 25 years.

I think what makes him suspect the brother is when the brother gets drunk and keeps asking him for money.
Love the movie. Contender for greatest ever made imo.
