Just got around to watching this series (I know I know, "what took you so long?"). I'm apprx 1.5 seasons into it and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm still a ways short of throwing it atop my "greatest show of all time" list, which seems to be damn near the consensus of boards like these.

My question (and please do not provide spoilers) is how well did the show sustain itself over the course of its five seasons?

My thoughts after season one (which ended pretty well) and getting into the beginning of season 2 are that I get the impression the writers didn't know whether or not they'd get a season two and so are starting somewhat anew with a new cast of characters (the Port union boys, etc.) while maintaining their ties to the old boys. So many shows lose steam once they stretch beyond the writer's timeline (see: LOST). Does The Wire have a solid holistic plot throughout its run? Or does it get a bit patchy?

ETA: McNulty = a-hole.

I'm in the same boat you are in, but not quite as far along (I'm at episode 9 I think)

Bubbles is my favorite by the way

There's a long term story, but I agree that season 1 seemed to be written both as a foundation for it, but also with outs in case if had to stand alone.

It sustains well, I hated season 2, but 3 and 4 are great and 5 is good.

One of the best written shows. Long term plot lines while focusing on specific city issues in each season.

It sustains. I think it gets better. Seasons 4 and 5 are my favorite.

Thanks for the insights.

BTW, the McNulty = a**hole comment was a joking reference to the fact that his name is almost synonymous with a**hole throughout the show thusfar. In fact, I don't think his name has ever been used without the modifier "A**hole"

Season two is the most important season of the series. Pay attention.

That's the drift I'm getting. Seems like after they got renewed for a second season they began laying the foundation for a more overarching plot.

There are some really great acting performances sprinkled throughout this show. Dominic West is incredible. Omar is the man. Bubbles is Bubbles. Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) is damn intriguing. Lester Freamon...how the hell wasn't this actor up there with Denzel Washington in his generation? I've even started to enjoy the new character from the Port union. Very solid actors, for the most part.
