The Wire--2 Seasons In And I'm Disappointed
So I see all the love that The Wire gets here and tell myself it's finally time to give this show a watch. Most of you have it ranked above The Sopranos and GoT and BB so it must be pretty special.

I'll admit that Season 1 was good. Not great, but good. Once you get a feel for the hierarchy you can finally start to get into the plot. It was good enough to keep me watching.

Season 2 however...I struggled to push through this snoozefest. There were some good comic relief moments but outside of that it's very blah. The dock workers--my god--they're so poorly written and acted. Ziggy in particular. The whole union struggling/smuggling/stealing plot is so shitty that it dilutes everything else like baking soda cutting crack.

As far as cop dramas go, NYPD Blue was a way better show. Apples and oranges to some degree, I know. But judging on writing and acting alone it was superior. At least to this point imo.

Fwiw I'm going to finish because I have faith in the M/TV Board peeps.

Season 2 is the worst. but the plot line is necessary--his entire series shows all the different angles of the drug world

Didn't even read. If you don't like it by now, it's not your kind of show.

I loved season 1, then felt let down after season 2.

I would advise you to start season 3 to make sure you don't like it.

Season 2 was my least favorite season. It's an anomaly. Stick with the show. You'll be rewarded.

Oh I'm going to watch Season 3. I'm going to watch the whole thing. From what I understand, Season 2 is generally panned by even the biggest Wire fans.

I just couldn't believe how incredibly bad it was. It's like Walking Dead bad.

If the rest of the show is anything like Season 1 then it's redeemable imo. The interactions between drug dealers were just way better than those of the dock workers. Better script, better acting. While binging Season 2 and I'm just thinking to myself the whole time "Get me to the next episode already so I can see how drunk McNulty gets and who he fricks."

IMO, Season 2 gets way better once you rewatch the series. It sets up everything that happens going forward with the Barksdale crew and the street drug trade as a whole. I'll reframe from saying anymore because of spoilers.

As for the Sobotka's they are a story of tragic figures. Frank was just trying to keep the world he knows alive when it was probably not worth saving. He is a taxi driver trying to stop uber.

The dock workers are honest people until they aren't. Simmon uses the dying union to show you what people will turn into when they are pushed against a wall. Frank bribes congressmen and turns a blind eye to the greeks. His nephew becomes a drug dealer.

The fall of the Sobotka family is going on while Stringer is trying to turn his family legit. It is a tale of two worlds.

I get not liking Ziggy, he isn't supposed to be particularly likable. He is a frick up and plays it pretty well. He was born into a lifestyle that is dying. He shows signs of being productive (good thief, tech savvy) but he is too busy wanting to be his dad.

this. it was jarring having all these new characters thrown in who where, on the surface, far less interesting than season 1.

but now, after watching the show 4 or 5 times, season 2 might be my favorite.

Hell no.

I still watch it because I'm a Wire purist

But it is by far the worst season and not THAT important to the show.

it is the best season

2, 3, 1, 4, 5

and i know everyone loves 4 a lot, but it's really almost a different show after 1-3 and simon forces down a lot of stuff

seasons 1-3 are Shakespearean

i'm with you.

wife hates it so i only get a chance to watch it late at night when she's in bed and frankly...i'm tired and can't really focus.

i fall asleep and repeatedly rewind parts of it and i still am not enjoying it.

i'm almost done with season one and i feel like i'm being forced to eat broccoli.

i WANT to like it..just about to pull the plug on it though.

You people are out of your damn minds

3 and 4 are the best and I don't think its close.

Also, best finale in television history.

You wouldn't like anything if this is how you watch it.

Also, my disdain for season 2 is entirely Ziggy's fault.

neither is the hamsterdam stuff in the season 3.

The most important event for season 3 happens in season 2.

The dock workers are unnecessary to the Avon/stringer story but the show is larger than avon/stringer.

I guess that's fair.

Ziggy is top of my list of male characters in shows I love that I want to waterboard though.

It's not the worst, 2nd worst. The entire plot of season 5 was so absurd and ludicrous that it's hard to even take it serious. It was like they had a few arcs to finish but were out of ideas so they just went with the first wild idea that they could come up with. Season 2 was decent, and could have been good except for that one fricking character, Ziggy. I hated every second he was on screen.
