This is next on my list of shows to watch. I was young when it aired.
Does it hold up well?

My husband says this is one of the best tv series of all time. He watched all of them like 2 years ago on Netflix.
I've never read anything bad about that show on this board fwiw. I only watched the occasional episode with him and I liked them(may go back and watch for myself one day).

The show is all dialogue, you'll either like it or you won't.

If you like Aaron sorkin shows you'll love it.

Everything's indoors and darkly lit, and everybody's wearing suits. It gave me claustrophobia.

Great show and a must watch, imo. You'll hear the occasional person say it leans too far left, but I've known many people who lean right to enjoy the show.
It does kind of drag about somewhere in the middle, and you can honestly skip some of those episodes and be okay, but the election episodes pick back up. Hell, I'd have voted for either of those guys.

The Newsroom is left. West Wing is far more subtle.
West Wing does a good job of painting both sides in a decent light other than the one minister, the talk show bitch and Haffley.
The also do paint Dems in a poor light from time to time like the Chesapeake cleanup.

Yes.
The last couple of seasons are a bit weaker, but the first few seasons are really really strong.

Meh. I hated newsroom because it was Sorkin retelling the news the way he wished his progressive little heart would have told it.
However, i like the west wing.

That's your litmus test for movies?

Your husband is 100% correct. It is definitely a top 10 all time series and it is my #1 all time series.

The first 4 seasons are in GOAT territory, season 5 is the weakest of the series but still very good IMO, Sorkin had left the series and it took them a little while to find their legs. From when Season 6 gets into election season until the series finale it is almost at the same level as the first 4 seasons...i only have a big problem with really one thing the show did towards the end.

It holds up so well, some episodes are oddly relevant to right now. I've been watching through it for maybe the fourth time, and I just got to an episode where a pharmaceutical company was charging higher prices for HIV medication in the country that needed it the most.

Good episode, introduction of Ainsley Hayes character

The show leans left, but it does a good job of not portraying every right wing character as a cartoon. There are few cartoons, as is going to happen in episodic television, but the longterm "villains" of the show all have their own viewpoints and justifications. The show is clearly sympathetic to a liberal viewpoint, but it does promote bipartisan co-operation. And Ainsley Hayes is awesome.
The first 4 seasons are amazing. Then Sorkin leaves and there's a clear dip in quality, before rallying for a pretty great Season 7, focusing on a new campaign for president. It's a great show, and in the running for best network show ever.
