The Truman Show is Jim Carrey's best work. True or False?

Gave this another watch late last night. It's on HBO-GO. Jim Carrey is known as a comedian, but I really think he is a superb actor when he wants to be. Really great story, but I'm not sure if this movie would have achieved the success it did with anyone else in that role.

Unrelated, but I can't fathom why SNL passed on him.

He has actually had more affecting dramatic perfermances in other films in my opinion. Laugh if you want, but the pathos and sense of identification he pulled off in the small moments of Dumb and Dumber were more dramatically effective. I think his best dramatic performance remains as the bitter, alcoholic brother in a TV Movie called Doing Time on Maple Drive. Saw it years ago and haven't seen it since.

Damn. Reading these answers just makes me realize what an awesome dramatic actor he is. It's almost like his comedy, while great, took away from that. If he had focused only on serious acting, he probably could have been a legend.

I thought he made Lloyd Christmas seem like a borderline psycopath but I really liked that. It worked in a comedy.

Quite possibly. This and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are the two that first come to mind.

True. It's a movie ahead of its time and one of my favorite movies ever.

The Truman Show is my favorite Carrey movie. I think it should have been nominated for Best Picture.

I thought Carrey was good in Man on the Moon but I'm biased against it because I HATED the movie. I hate how they changed Kaufman's life story to fit the narrative--specifically how they made the Carnegie Hall show after he had cancer when in reality it was at least 3 years before he had cancer. Too heavy-handed for me.

I think his performance in Man on the Moon was really good.

I love you Phillip Morris is also a gem that doesn't seem to get a lot of credit.
