Pretty much what happens in what many consider possibly the best Batman movie of all time, Mask of the Phantasm.

Problem with this is if Batman v Superman is in the same universe as Suicide Squad, then Joker just started becoming a thug and isnt even a mastermind yet and Batman is already old and past his prime.
I think they're going with an older Batman, but I wouldn't call him past his prime. He's not 60 like in The Dark Knight Returns. Maybe more like 45. Although I do like the things I've seen from Batman in this universe, I am interested to see how they approach that.

I am digging the look they gave Killer Croc. So glad they didn't use CGI for it. The rest of the characters look really good as well.

I agree - i don't get the hate for Leto's Joker.

people need to accept that no matter who else makes a joker, it won't touch Heath's - and that's ok.

people just need to accept that its a different tone than the batman films, so adapting the character for this movie is completely acceptable.

FWIW, Ledger's Joker is not really comic book-y. That shouldn't take away from the quality of the performance, but I'm ready to see a little more manic portrayal.

That isn't necessarily true.

Ledger's joker from an acting standpoint and a realistic gritty portrayal was fantastic. It absolutely perfectly fit the Nolan Universe. But those Nolan Batman movies were almost not comic book movies.

It was far from an untouchable portrayal of "Joker".

I'm looking forward to a more comical, manic, insane, and dangerous portrayal of Joker. Which is what this Leto Joker looks like it might be.

In the Nolan universe, Joker had some traps and stuff, but it never really felt like the full extent of who I as a comic book reader knew as the Joker.

Setting elaborate ridiculous traps, the comic insanity with a real dangerous edge to it, and especially doing things just because. Yes, Ledger had the "dogs chasing cars" monologue that describes the Joker but everything he did was extremely planned out and well executed.

I'm hoping Leto's Joker is more of an unhinged madman genius. Ledger was more of an extremely well put together supervillain.

this looks like its going to suck. Wayyyyyy too many characters IMHO, especially as they aren't going to be able to do much backstory on them. I would imagine that Deadshot and harley quinn will get the backstory.

the only two character's I know here are Harley and Croc, but I am liking this so far. I wonder what role Joker and Batman will have (apparently Ben Affleck was on set last week)

you hit it on the head - what i was trying to say is what you and el hit, i just worded mine not so great.

i am pretty much a wait and see kind of guy in a lot of movies, and even sports. it is rare that a movie makes me immediately say "no way in hell", like the new FF film did.

Anyone else think Jai Courtney actually looks like Tom Hardy, at least, while in costume? That pic in the OP makes it look like he does to me.

The best way for DC to compete with Marvel's movie universe is do the opposite of what Marvel did IMO. Marvel had this huge universe planned from the start so they had the luxury of telling origin stories. DC has the chance to make movies for comic book readers. We just want cool movies with the characters we love. No back story required. We are already familiar. I know it's not the safest strategy because the average movie goer doesn't know a lot these characters but I think it could work. Is the average movie goer even interested in why Killer Croc looks that way or how Harley Quinn became Joker's pet? Or do they just want to see a hot chick in pig tails and a cool looking monster dude beat people up?

This is how DC differs from Marvel the most, IMO. Superman has been done. Batman has been done (in fact he just got a trilogy). Joker has been done. Those are your top three characters right there. Superman got an origin story. They can't do another Batman origin story and they are introducing The Joker in a new and interesting way. One could argue, and I think fairly, that Aquaman and Wonder Woman should have gotten an origin story. One could also argue, and I think fairly, that they are introducing too many characters in BvS and Suicide Squad. But it's going to come down to how they execute it.

GotG had five main characters that some have never heard of, lots of secondary characters that lots of people have never heard of, and one very popular super villain. One would call that approach risky, yet they pulled it off with flying colors because they executed it properly. Some also argue that they benefited from people not being familiar with the characters because they had no expectations. We can't possibly know what this movie will be until we can see it for ourselves.

well I am sick of origin stories, and I read comics and I really don't much about these characters. I think its just too much.

Of course days of future past did a great job of this, and it worked.

I still think its going to suck. I also think BVS is going to suck. I think they are just too rushed, and trying to catch up to marvel.

Tom Hardy reveals why he dropped out:

quote:

Hardy was in talks to take on the role of Rick Flagg, the leader of the Suicide Squad, but he was subsequently forced to drop out over scheduling conflicts. Joel Kinnaman eventually took over the role, but when Steve recently spoke with Hardy at the press day for Mad Max: Fury Road, the actor discussed his fondness for the script and concept for Suicide Squad (Note: “alley” means “right up there with the best”):

Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out. I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really fricking alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…it’s fricking alley. And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.”

While some rumors surfaced that Hardy was unhappy with the direction of the script and that’s why he dropped out of Suicide Squad, the actor reveals that schedule overruns on The Revenant are really and truly to blame:

There’s a very practical element as to why I’ve missed out on that foray, which is because Alejandro [G. Inarritu] has overshot by three months in Calgary, so we’ve got to go back out to Patagonia or Alaska to continue shooting The Revenant which has turned into a much bigger beast than we thought, but that also looks exceptional.”

Thanks for posting that. Too many people assumed that Hardy leaving was the dead canary in the coal mine. That the hiring of Will Smith ran him off.

Yeah, Innaritu is shooting The Revenant with all natural light and "in order", for the most part. Its gone way over.
