The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

I had never seen this film until last night and I must say, It was fantastic. I know reviews on the movie were mixed when it came out and it kind of isn't for everybody.
But the emotion in some of those scenes near the end are pretty incredible. Yes, there's scenes that just shouldn't be in the movie and didn't fit at all. Like the shark being in the Greenland frigid oceans... Why even have a shark there? Made no sense. And some of the day dream sequences were kind of bad, but that's the classic premise of the character, I get it.
Honestly, if Stiller had named the movie something else just made the movie without the day dream sequences it would have still worked. Just a schlubby little guy who gets exposed to true, lifechanging people and experiences would've been awesome.
Maybe it's the film camera enthusiast in me or Life magazine romanticism, but I thoroughly loved this movie.

I love the film. I had no interest in seeing it based on the trailers. Decided to watch it one day during a sleet storm in BR and was pleasantly surprised. It's one of the few films I can pick up at any point in the movie and watch until the end.

I watched it a while back knowing nothing about it and was pretty surprised that I ended up liking it

It was very enjoyable and well made. I love the end with the Life photo.
It's just a fun movie.

I was honestly excited to see this movie but chose to wait until it was on demand/Netflix/etc. It was about what I expected, thought it had more potential tbh based on the previews, but loved the ending. Iirc great music throughout.

Agreed. Very surprised at how well the camera work and music was done. Stuff that needs to be taught in film schools.

Really enjoy this movie any time it comes on. I'm not a big fan of Stiller or Penn as people, but they made those characters seem cool as hell.
Also,
This was actually a remake of a 1947 movie with Danny Kaye

It's actually an adaptation of a short story by James Thurber, though the movies are a lot more elaborate.
I really liked this movie. The soundtrack is probably my favorite part, and I have it in my library.
OP, it's actually Iceland in the summer time, and there are lots of cold water sharks roaming around. One of the biggest hot spots for great whites, for example, is the cold waters of northern California, Oregon and Washington. The movie scenario is probably not likely, but it's not completely far fetched.

Isn't it based on a character from a short story in the New Yorker who daydreams a lot? Would kind of defeat the purpose.

i watched it for the first time on FX or something like that.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it a lot.

It sure as shite knows how to pull on that string we all have about a life of adventure as opposed to our actual lives. Made me wish I was a magazine photographer

Yes, I know thats why I alluded to source material in my original post. My point was, I thought the daydream sequences were the weakest part of tbe film but I understand why they had to be there... It's a Walter Mitty movie.. That's the character.
What I was saying is that I felt Stiller could have made a very original movie (which he did) without using the Mitty veil. In fact it probably wouldve been even better. The story works either way though.

This movie really struck a chord with me. The cinematography, the soundtrack, the storyline...all fantastic.

I caught this, like many by chance not expecting anything. Lots of charm, very cool soundtrack and cinematography.
Kinda spoilers for those who haven't seen I guess:
The Himalayan sequence ending up with Sean Penn (who's face is now apparently a catcher's mitt) leading up to the ghost cat/goat soccer/Junip song was pretty amazing.
Only drawback was Adam Scott basically doing his Stepbrother's role with a terrible beard.
Its high points make it a "watch if it's on" movie for me.

I just finished watching The Truman Show again, and I saw this thread, I felt that one of those instant character connections. Maybe I had a few too many Lagunitas, but I feel like the two character parallel each other in so many ways (trapped life, discovery, etc.).

As amazing as the Truman Show was, I think Walter Mitty really hit me harder. You were rooting for Truman but you WERE Walter Mitty...living vicarious through him and his adventure.
The soundtrack, as so many have mentioned, puts it over the top. It's probably also no coincidence that the two most likeable characters these two actors --Stiller and Carrey-- have ever played came in similar type roles. I gues Mitty was just more grounded in real life and emotional. It's three days and I'm still thinking about the film. How did so many critics not like this movie?? It's only like 51 percent on RT.

Movie was amazing. I was always of fan of Walter Mitty since school. Critics can ruin great movies by pushing negative narratives about a film. I go into every I watch open minded and try to stay away from the chatter, so I can judge it unbiased.
