Paranormal Activity got me because most of the movie is just doors moving.
So the house I was in at the time would do this when the air conditioner kicked on. Scared the shite out of me.
Also, I'm about halfway through IT, the novel, and there are parts where people can hear kids laughing and shite down the sink drain. Didn't go near my sink at night for about 2 weeks after reading that part.

EASILY The Ring. frick everything about that movie.
Also, always shocked to see so many people scared of the Paranormal Activity movie. That shite was so dumb.

I agree. It depended on loud noises to try to scare you. I've never seen any of the sequels, though. Maybe they are better.
The most frightening thing about that movie to me was the fact that the main actress had those huge tits and never once took them out for the audience. Oh! The horror!
I'll put in a vote for "Event Horizon" as being scary as hell. Sam Neil at the end...yikes!

Cannot agree more on the Ring - I don't scare easily, but I made the mistake of watching that one night home alone.
I'm thankful I didn't fall asleep with the remote in the bed and accidentally turn the TV on.

I can't watch The Amityville Horror. Something about an invisible pig in the house. Nope...

While I know it isn't the scariest movie, nothing ever freaked me out like the ring

Silence of the Lambs, by far. I watched it for the first time while Derrick Todd Lee was active & nobody knew who was doing it. Traumatized the hell out of me.
More recently, It Follows was more terrifiying than I expected. I still kind of hate walking outside at night, even just to take the trash to the road.

Exorcist
The Ring
Jaws
For some reason The Devils Advocate came to mind. It wasn't "scary" per se, but it was a damn good film.

The most scared I've ever been was the abduction scene in Fire in the Sky. That shite was terrifying, though the rest of the movie is meh. But most of the theater got up and left it was so scary, and I was almost hugging a stranger in another row, as our significant others had both abandoned us.
Whole movie? I still go with The Descent. The Ring is a great answer, though.

I thought The Blair Witch Project was one of the most disappointing horror films I'd ever seen.
I agree Event Horizon is a good one.
The Exorcist obvi.
For an older film, The Omen is pretty good.
Hard to say, really. I don't think I've ever seen one that truly scared me.
I saw The Ring with a friend in college and he was afraid to do anything for like two weeks straight.

Rosemary's Baby is pretty good.
When I first saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the old one), I thought it was a comedy/parody.

Going off reservation with a TV show.
But there was a CSI 2 part episode where some dude gets pissed and drugs one of the guys and buries him alive. Has a live feed video cam and mic. When he wakes up the guy tells him exactly where he is and only leaves him with one thing. A pistol to blow his brains out.
The show goes on for 2 episodes of him in total silence I believe at one point he shoots a hole in the coffin which then causes it to crack and dirt to leak in..... And fire ants.
That show had me fricked up for 2 weeks. Just a damned TV show.

Event Horizon was really disappointing. I saw The Exorcist when I was around 8 and thought it was hilarious. The movies that scare me are the ones that don't show me everything and let me scare myself. Paranormal Activity terrified me. The tension it built and the constant anticipation of something happening really fricked with me. It wasn't until after it was over that I realized nothing happened the whole movie.

17 or something. Yeah, I saw it in theaters. I know the whole "omg it was real" thing.

Jaws, when it came out, while on vacation at the beach.
I still have problems getting in the ocean

When I was a kid Return to Oz scared the shite out of me. Those wheelers gave me nightmares

and see i felt like the exorcist was a parody/comedy.
there are so many variables that go into horror movies in terms of the effect it has on a person, more so than any other genre, age being the main one imo. but even just the crowd in the theater can completely ruin the mood of a horror movie if you have idiots laughing and talking. or just your own personal mood going into a movie.
