The Sara Goldfarb scenes from Requiem for a Dream are the most disturbing

I can deal with the heroin and "arse to arse" but this old lady popping pills to lose weight is highly disturbing to me.
What are your favorite scenes?

Is that the mom that's addicted to game shows and shite?
She was the most disturbing for me. The arse to arse scene was screwed up but 19 year old me still knew that was Jennifer Connolly in porno-like action.
Most of the characters in that movie were sad because they were losing their lives to drugs when they had so much potential to be great. But the older lady had no potential. She was a lonely old wash up who literally had nothing besides her addictions. That was fricked up.

Yeah.. that's her.
And you're exactly right. Rewatching for the first time in years and these scenes trouble me

The doctor that doesnt even look at her and writes scripts is a nice touch

Ellen Burstyn was robbed of an Oscar for that performance. Though I'm not sure why they nominated her for Best Actress instead of Best Supporting Actress.

arse to arse is the most heart-wrenching scene I've ever seen in cinema.

This x100. One of my all time favorite underrated performances. Her shaky, sad voice and mannerisms are just painful.

I feel like this entire movie is more disturbing to me now, more so than when i watched in college 15 years ago.
Young adults should watch this shite as a warning

Harry crying in the hospital after he's had his arm amputated always gets me as well.

I've seen Requiem probably a dozen times and cannot help but feel like absolute shite for the rest of the day every time I watch it. Last ~25 minutes are just gut wrenching

Ellen Burstyn is a treasure. She can straight up act. She's won the Triple Crown of Acting for crying out loud. Not many can say that.

Damn
Obviously i loved her performance, hence this thread. Glad to know a lot of people were equally compelled

No doubt

Juliette Binoche – Chocolat as Vianne Rocher
Ellen Burstyn – Requiem for a Dream as Sara Goldfarb
Laura Linney – You Can Count On Me as Sammy Prescott
I think that julia Roberts performance, while not bad, was the 5th best among her fellow nominees. i too would have given the award to burstyn.

agreed. Her talking to Harry about wanting to wear the dress so people on tv can see her and about how she has nothing and is alone.
it's tough.
fun fact, during that scene you can see the camera move/shift a bit toward the end. it's the cameraman crying

Julia Roberts won for Erin Brockovich that year. I remember her acceptance speech being exceptionally long.
I've never seen either movie so I can't make an informed opinion, but everything I've seen and read points to Ellen Burstyn giving the better performance.
Julia's Oscar, much like Sandra's 9 years later, was a career award.
