Worst creature design ever put on film?

When Finn finds out they're on board and gives the reaction he does I was really curious to see what they looked liked.

Only to find out JJ created a rubber ball, made half its face teeth and gave it flailing arms. These things look like theyre straight out of Monsters Inc. it's by far the worst Star Wars creature ever created. They should be absolutely ashamed.

I didn't really care for them at first, but they've grown on me a bit. I think the mind reading tentacle creature from Rogue One was worse myself..

There was the fact that it was supposed to drive him insane, but he was cured once someone told him "you are the pilot".

"I'm the pilot. I'm the pilot!"

I consider Jar Jar more of an awful character more than creature design.

I'm talking about out of animals such as the Rankor, the creatures in the arena scene on Geonosis, the bird/lizard hybrid Obi Wan rides in Ep 3. The Rathtars are a joke

Very little of TFA was memorable aside from the visual effects

As many times as I have rewatched TFA, I skip over this part every time. It just drags on and has no point to the story.

Dude, the lightsaber scene in the snow between Rey and Kylo Ren, when Kylo tries to use the force to grab the lightsaber Finn dropped...the build up of THE star wars chorus...only to have the lightsaber fly past him and into Rey's hand...BOOM FULL ON CHORUS. Yeah that was memorable.

That alone was better than every second of the drivel they slung onto the screen in Rogue One.

I agree the entire sequence seems out of place and the Rathtars are over the top. However I understand why the scene was probably inserted here. I'd get up and take a break when this scene comes on as well.

Although not part of this discussion, the rival gangs were introduced here to show us that Han is still being Han. He later told Leia that he went back to doing what he knew best. Instead of them just telling us, they showed us. The Rathtars were a device so the film could quickly move on to the main points of the scene.

The sequence with the Rathtars coalesced the bond between Finn and Rey when she rescued him. It also introduced a chaotic event that allowed us to see the strength of Chewy's bowcaster, which is pivotal in understanding it's impact on Kylo Ren and his duel with Rey later, and it facilitated a situation to where they all ended up on the Falcon and Han could see for himself how special Rey was by knowing how to bypass the compressor.

There were probably other ways to accomplish these things, but maybe this was what they thought was the quickest way to do it without bogging down the story further.

ETA outside of Binks this one is up there

The visuals were the least memorable. They went out of their way to avoid using CGI except in situations where they absolutely had to, which made the film look dated by comparison to Rogue One which was visually impressive yet still grounded in reality. Rogue One is a really nice mix of the OT and prequel-trilogy style special effects that doesn't totally over-rely on CGI.

I dont mind the scene, but what does bug me, is that (1) they ate everything in their path within seconds......Finn, well him, it drags around for a tour of the ship. And (2) if the creature has to roll, how does the tentacle that's holding Finn keep him upright in the forward position??

It's almost like it was intentional....the visuals were top notch in TFA. I'll take real sets over CGI 10/10 times.

I think you can use CGI without making your movie look like a prototype for Avatar the way Lucas did with the prequels.

Star Wars creatures are historically hit and miss. (The big new character in Empire Strikes Back was a Muppet, complete with Fozzie Bear voice.)

Which is one of the reasons why Lucas spent decades trying to fix everything.

That whole sequence from the Rathtars to the costumes of the bad guys didn't feel very Star Wars to me. Very out of place.

To be fair though, the whole movie felt like "great value" brand ANH.
