The Purge (the first one)

I've just seen it for the first time recently.
did the board like it?
i like the concept and some of the execution was ok but jeez two major things in the movie were just terrible.
spoilers below:
WTF was the thing with the boyfriend??!! hey i know your dad doesn't like us together but everyone will really like me after i murder him. especially you, teenage girl. isn't that what all daughters want? their boyfriend to shoot their father in their own house. i can't even wrap my brain around that part of the plot.
even if it was a cheap device/diversion to let the "hunted guy" in, how awful was that?
also i love rich murdering psycho killers as much as the next guy. and if somehow the movie ended with a battle btwn those in the house vs the "hunters" it wouldn't have been a total shitshow.
but then having the neighbors come and kill the hunters so to have some "twist" where they want to kill the family is stupid.
the motive is bc they made money off of them selling security systems? every one in that neighborhood is rich and made money from something.
did they go and kill their realtor and their car dealer and their financial advisors too?
i mean what the whole entire frick?

Premise was good. Every damn scene was a "saved at the last minute" moment that was just cheap. Thought this movie sucked. I've heard the second one is actually pretty decent, though.

My main question was one of practicality.
So you spend potentially tens of thousands of dollars on fortifying your home yet you didn't think to but a hole that you can shoot out of if anyone approaches your house?
Castles had arrow slits. This isn't a new idea. All the dad had to do was blow away the lead creep at the beginning of the movie and we wouldn't have had a movie.

Other than that, I love The Purge. #2 was better though.

I went in wanting to like it because so many had said it was bad. Even with low expectations it was bad. Could have been much better.

I thought the neighbors hated them because they were the most successful family in the neighborhood. Everyone was successful, but he was the most successful, and they hated him for it.

Both kids pissed me off. Ethan was trying to keep his family safe but both his kids were running around the house the whole time. I don't think his daughter went in the safe room 1 time with her parents. If I was Ethan I would've dragged my daughter and son by the hair and made them stay in 1 room where I knew they would be safe. Those 2 kids were just free lancing around the house the whole movie.

Dude's like driving home from work at 5pm just 2 hours before the world goes to shite?
Family is casually eating dinner when the clock strikes 7 "Well look at that, I suppose it's time to lock our shite up :notacareintheworld:"
If that was me, no one in my family would leave the house and our shite would be locked down a full 24 hours (at least) before the purge started. That fricking guy could have been murdered on the interstate because he got stuck in a traffic jam on the way home from a routine day of work.
