My thoughts before I see this movie....

I really hope it's a great movie. I really think this will finally be the Superman movie we've been waiting decades for. The original Superman Movie with Christopher Reeve (God Rest his soul) did the Superman Mythos justice. I think this will be a movie that does exactly the same but with a different take adapted to modern times. Now the question for me is does it fit this age and period or is it going to be a movie that will resonate with any time and period? If it's the first one, it'll be pretty damn good. If it's the latter, it's going to be fricking incredible. Obviously, from the trailers having so much action, this movie is going to make Superman Returns look like an ABC Family home movie and that's a good thing. We want to see character development but we don't want it to effect the very nature of the movie being a Superhero/Comic book movie. If it can achieve a perfect balance of maybe like 40-45% story and 55-60% action, then it's going to be a great movie.

I have a feeling Michael Shannon as General Zod is going to be incredible. I wouldn't be surprised to see people put it up there with Heath Ledger's Joker. I think he's going to be the baddest arse muthafricker. I think he's going to be scary and is going to chill some people in the audience. It's not going to be campy like Terrence Stamp was. Shannon's General Zod is going to really hurt some people and that's really going to challenge Supes emotionally. I'm interested to see how he responds to that.

Now anybody would be Superman if he had two dads like Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe, they're are going to be great in their roles.

I hope we see a Krypton where we can be emotionally connected to it and feel a genuine sadness when it does it finally meet its death. For as great as Richard Donner's movie was, I really didn't like how his Krypton was nothing more than a block of ice and being very boring. I really don't think I was upset at all when it finally exploded when I watched the movie for the first time. Looks like it's going to be different this time around.

And that's it. Enjoy the show folks, I hope we get some good discussion going in this thread in the wake of the premiere of Man of Steel. And I hope you enjoy this movie.

I know this thread is a day early but I just wanted to keep all the spoilers in one place and continue the discussion going from the review thread.

This isn't going to happen. Sorry. Reviews would have already been stating that. Also, it's not going to happen sorry

I've never seen a movie where all of the critics who gave negative reviews actually made me more excited for the movies because their reviews were so bad and their "negatives" are inherent positives.

Looks like a lot of great action, a great Lois, an okay Superman. We haven't seen the classic adult Clark, which doesn't bode well.

Too much Jor-El, too much Krypton, too much alien stuff.

Superman isn't about his being an alien, it's about his being Earth's hero.

But it should be a great action movie. Looks like we'll finally see a comic book Kirby fight scene brought to the screen.

Ah, I fully believe Henry Cavill is going to do a great job. For younger kids, when they think of Supes, they'll think of Cavill. I hope it's that good.

And that is completely ok with me. It's more than acceptable to try something different on a such a great character when it's time do a new take for modern times. It only works as long it's not done in an outrageous manner and you can't suspend your disbelief to accept and understand it.

And I'm fine with this too.

The back story of Krypton itself was very underrepresented in the Donner films and in the cartoons as well. I want to see what kind of planet Superman spent his infancy on. I want to see how Jor-El found out Krypton was going to meet its death very soon. I want to see the drama with the council that casued Jor-El to devise plans to send his only son alone in the universe towards a distant planet that are full of people like them but so similar.

Look in the OP about my thoughts on Richard Donner's krypton.

Anyway, I would make a twist about Krypton's death; it's demise is not natural and alien enemies of Krypton caused it instead, they sneaked onto Krypton and put something in the planet's core causing it to explode. Everybody, including Jor-El would have no idea that would be the cause. Basically my twist is that Krypton would be murdered.

quote:

Superman isn't about his being an alien, it's about his being Earth's hero.

True about being Earth's hero, but people also forget that he's basically an immigrant that came across the vast universe and landed on a planet where there is nobody else like him at all. He looks the same as us, but he's very different. It's how he uses that point of view to look at the place he calls home in a different perspective and that's how he becomes Earth's hero. I hope I've explained it well enough.

Word.

I am really looking forward to this.

Was so pumped for this movie but seeing the reviews is killing my buzz. Looks like everything Snyder touches turns into just action and no acting. Maybe they will bring a diff director for number 2

I'm as pumped as ever to go see it. As a person who thought Superman Returns was quite a mess and fairly boring, I can't wait for Synder's take.

I agree. Hans Zimmer nails it as usual.

Speaking of soundtracks, I was just listening to this score from All Star Superman by Christopher Drake and its just as good IMO. What do you think?

Hans Zimmer is easily the best composer of the last 25 years. His works are magnificent across the board: from The Lion King to The Thin Red Line to POTC to TDK. Simply amazing.

His work in this one might be his best IMO.

Nice. I could hear a lot of John Williams in it with the trills and runs and the xylophone stuff. I'm a sucker for that and it gives me a sense of nostalgia.

IMO, his best work was on Gladiator. When I heard Elegy in the second trailer for MoS, I got chills.
