What is the board consensus on the quality of this season?

I've just started binge watching the show for the first time. It began while I was in professional school and didn't have much time for television so I never got into it.

After watching season one I couldn't help but think I'd been duped. The show had a weird tone and all the characters were assholes...especislly Michael Scott.

However, I just started season 2 and it seems like an entirely different show. Better production quality. Better tone. Michael is more endearing.

I'm now starting to see what all the hype is about.

Season 2-5 might be the GOAT.

I have similar sentiments but usually go 3-7 as the GOAT

The show was still trying to find it's footing in Season 1. Seasons 2-3 are GOAT in my opinion. The show started to lose it's way a bit when they started to give Andy a more prominent role late in Season 4. Seasons 5+ are ok and are worth watching but aren't as good as the first 4.

The last season is underrated and the Finale might be the best series finale in TV history. The entire series is easily the most rewatchable series out there.

I felt the show had a serious drop off starting in season 6 but especially season 7 onwards. Loved seasons 2-5 though.

Oh ffs.. I'm ending season 3 right now and was hoping that ^ wouldn't be happening...

Also I loved season 1, but definitely noticed a difference from season one to two, but enjoyed them both.

It started out trying to be the British Office.

Keep watching. 4 doesn't drop off at all...my favorite episodes of the series are in season 4. Honestly 2-5 is damn near perfect. The rest is still worth watching.

I love season one, but they did play up the awkwardness more. They became a little more zany in season two.

Season one is difficult to watch at times. Somewhat likes Parks &Rec in that season two is much better with a very different feel in terms of cast chemistry and overall production. And several great seasons followed by a couple that I wouldn't rewatch at this point.

There aren't any bad seasons, but Michael Scott seemed to evolve from "man, what a frickin' douchebag" to "oh look, it's that zany Michael again". Also, the show kinda loses its "documentary" vibe a little more each season, so it eventually starts resembling a typical comedy (although better than most) sans laugh track. If you were a fan of the British Office first, these things might be a little off-putting, but if you'd never watched it, then it'd probably be no big deal to you.

Agree with most of this. I think it started losing its way though when they focused so much on the Jim/Pam romance. That story arc got so boring to me, and is what eventually lead to me not watching it anymore. I made it about halfway through the season after they got married, and ditched it.

I re-watch random episodes from seasons 2, 3, and 4 all the time. They never get old.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I loved Season 1.

The basketball game, Diversity Day, and the Healthcare episodes are 3 of my favorites.

It's hard to judge any show by season 1. Hell, even always Sunny wasn't great in season 1

Wasn't season one like only six episodes? It's definitely worth viewing more before you make any decision on the quality of the show. From season 2 until Michael left it's an incredibly good and funny show. Hang in there, you'll probably like it like most everyone else after getting settled in. If you don't, to hell with you, you have poor taste lol.

The one thing I remember about season one was the great Michael Scott line talking about Lincoln when he says, if you are a racist I will attack you with the north.

After Michael leaves, the show does drop off. It still has it's moments. For some reason, the opening of the Tallahassee episode where Jim fricks with Dwight at the hotel makes me laugh uncontrollably every single time.

I've been doing a re watch lately.....

man you get a real appreciation for how great Carrell was in that role.

the Jim/Dwight dynamic is fun to watch shift over the years

I don't hate the post Michael Scott season as much as I did on the initial watch. It is definitely a step down, but if it were airing today would still be considered a top notch comedy. It still has plenty of funny moments if you watch it with less of a critical eye.
