Anyone watch this show...is it even still a current airing show? I just finished catching up to live shows on Burn Notice and was looking for something new to watch and gave this a shot.

It reminds me of a more serious version of Psych. That said, I really enjoy Patrick Jane's whole demeanor and his sense of humor. The guy playing him, I think, does a really good job. Not a huge fan of Robin Tunney, she just looks odd to me, but she's not terrible by any means...just something about her looks that makes me not really pay attention when she's on the screen. It reminds me of how I have a large distaste for Emily Deschanel's voice in Bones, but Tunney's looks won't keep me from watching the show.

anyway, seems like a really enjoyable show so far after seeing just 5-6 episodes.

Its formulaic but the acting is pretty solid and he does a very good job in the lead. I'm not a fan of most cbs dramas but will watch this when its on/I'm not doing other things.

Do we know who Red John is yet?

I started watching some early in the show but haven't kept up with it lately. It was alright, not terrible, not great.

And I agree with you on Jane. Very well acted character.

yeah, I've noticed that already, but to be honest it doesn't bother me at all. If anything, it just means it's a perfect show for me to turn on in the background while I'm playing computer games or something. It's nice to have a show that isn't something that requires my full attention to make sure I don't miss anything important that could screw up the story from week to week.

I'm literally only 5-6 episodes in to the first season...so no *I* have no clue who he is or if it's even known at this point. If it is though, please don't put any spoilers in

It is on CBS on Sunday nights. It was moved from Thursday to Sunday beginning this season. I think it's excellent, but I watch NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, Elementary...(see the pattern?).

I like it because there is always the background story of Red John, which drives Jane to the point of near craziness.

Yeah, Tunney is kinda weird in that role. She has kind of a crooked face and a slouching posture.

That's what it basically is, and Psych came first. Psych references it in an episode. I do like Simon Baker in the role though

To me, Psych is more of a comedy theme. The Mentalist is more serious and dark. Jane is driven by Red John, who killed his wife and daughter.

BTW, I don't think we'll ever know who Red John is until the series finale.

Haha, I remember that episode that you linked, good stuff. I never caught on to the joke because I had never watched the Mentalist. Psych is one of my favorite shows on TV atm.

According to Wikipedia, he has still not found out who he is. And a snippet below of who Red John is, which you NEED to know or else the show is pointless IMO.

quote:

Red John is a fictional character and the leading antagonist on the CBS crime drama The Mentalist. He is an infamous serial killer who began killing in 1998, and may have killed at least twenty eight (now around thirty) people in California, Nevada, and Mexico. Five years prior to the action of the first episode, he murdered the wife and the daughter of protagonist Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), making Jane his dedicated nemesis.[1]

Me and the wife watched when it first started. Made it two seasons or so, but then it started to air against something else that the wife liked and MW2 dropped.

I liked it though. The red-head was sexy as frick. Simon Baker did a legit job with his role. It's probably something i'll catch up with over time

This season they're changing up the angles a little bit (writing wise... not camera angles). It feels a little fresher. I'm enjoying it more than last year.

I agree. I do think, however, that Lorelei will be a nagging side plot for a long time.

I love this show. Definitely a show you can have on in the background (since TNT plays like 5 episodes a night; mostly in order)

The new season so far is excellent. I think it may have another season after this one before they call it quits. I've missed the last two, but will definitely catch up before this weekend.
