Looks pretty damn good. Definitely going to check out the book prior to release.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

It's gonna be awesome.
There were some lol moments in the book. I hope that humour transfers over to the big screen.

I can already see some differences from the book just on that trailer alone.

Val Kilmer already did this in Red Planet.

How good was the book?

Yea looks awesome, solid cast.

Interesting that Damon plays a character similar to the one in Interstellar, but also very different.

did that trailer basically just show the entire fricking movie? holy shite. i mean, it looks great, but could they not give away the entire plot?

script seems pretty cringeworthy

having read the book, a few tidbits in response to other comments:
1) the book is actually hilarious because of the personality of mark watney. the trailer doesn't even begin to show this side of him. i cant imagine making a movie out of this without that coming through, because it was a such a noticeable component of the book. in fact, when they cast damon for the role i was a bit surprised. i thought it would have to be someone who is more of a comedic genius, yet still be a dramatic actor and not a straight up comedian.
2) the story has been told in many ways (robinson crusoe, cast away, whatever). what makes this a bit different is that the bulk of the book is pretty technical thought out explanations and details of the engineering being done to "science the shite out of it". the writer, andy weir, is a pretty hard core science nerd. definitely waaaay different than red planet. for one, red planet was poorly written. basically an excuse to have a movie set on mars. the science behind it all be damned. i also think the cast for the martian is in a whole other league than red planet.
no movie is for everyone, but if you tend to like sci-fi (especially space sci-fi), and if you tend to like sci-fi grounded somewhat in reality rather than far-fetched stuff that 'just works' because its a movie - then i think you would enjoy this.
its a bit hard to explain the vibe of this - you really need to read the book if this sort of genre interest you.

This.
"I'm gonna have to science the shite out of this."
"In your face Neil Armstrong."
I may avoid this film based on those two linguistic atrocities alone.

Pretty good book, I really enjoyed it. I hope they really do a good job injected the character's sense of humor, because without that, would be terrible

Looks pretty stellar to me. Looking forward to seeing it

Apparently, I have no reason to see it because that trailer showed just about everything.

I'm typically gung-ho on space exploration. But the reality of going to Mars, and especially the idea of colonizing it, is not going to happen anytime soon. And we're going to need some significant scientific breakthroughs.
These two articles are interesting.
Extended space flight is grueling.
