So I've been watching this a lot lately because the kids love it.
Is the town called Thneedville because the Onceler made his Thneed?
Or
Did the Oncler call his invention the Thneed because of Thneedville?

This.
He made his thneed out of the trees, which caused the area to be a wasteland and resulted in the city being built. No air was a result of the thneeds being made.
thneed came before Thneedville.
