'The Last Jedi' was not rewritten to address Carrie Fisher's death

The part he did reveal involved the fate of Princess Leia after the death of Carrie Fisher. It turns out 2019’s still-untitled Episode IX, directed by Colin Trevorrow, will have to deal with that sad reality all on its own.

“She appears throughout VIII. And what I can say about that is, we’re not changing VIII to deal with her passing,” Iger said. “So her performance, which we’re really pleased with, remains as it was in VIII.”

Now for the part that will relieve many fans of General Leia. “In Rogue One we created digitally a few characters. One had been an actor who actually passed away and was in an earlier Star Wars film,” he said, referring to Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin. “We’re not doing that with Carrie.”

The proper way to send Leia out for episode 9 with all due diligence to Carrie Fisher is for her death to be offscreen.

Whatever happens, I have every expectation that it will be handled respectfully and will honor the memory of the character and the actress that played her so well.

I don't think they'll go the CGI route but they will have to do at least a little bit of Brandon Lee style body double work to give her a good death, if "death" is the avenue they're taking.

People will bitch either way but they'll go apeshit if she's given a two sentence "Holy shite...Snoke just blew up General Leia's ship!" sendoff.

It would have to be damn near perfect for this to be acceptable.

But honestly I think this is evidence that Leia dies in episode 8 and the show runners saying they don't know what to do about her for episode 9 is a head fake.

The mutiny would be nuclear as it would be so anti-climatic and just completely random out of the blue.

Leia deserves a climatic hero's death and a funeral fit for a queen.

She should be recast for 9. Period. It won't harm her memory to have a quality actress play Leia in the final episode.

Stevie Nicks...

May have to dub her voice, but I don't think you can come any closer for a doppelganger.

Spoilers:

It's because Leia is in a coma for much of 8. They will just have her not wake up in 9.

This is a losing scenario for the filmmakers, no matter what they choose. Some Star Wars fans are notoriously difficult to please, and nitpick like no other fan base.

Kill off Leia, and you're a monster.

Kill off Leia the wrong way way, and you fail to honor the character.

Recast Leia, and you fail to honor Carrie Fisher.

CGI her, and you're ghoulish.

Body-double her, and its schlocky.

Kill her off-screen, and it's lame. She didn't die heroically enough.

What an enormous pain. My take? Recast her. Take the bullet. You're fricked whatever you choose. But at least Carrie Fisher's work as Princess Leia would be complete, with no alterations. Get out in front of the "outrage" with a little positive p.r. about how you want to treat Carrie and Leia right, and that means having a successor to the role, rather than force a technological or story solution that's not right for the character.

This is what they should do, but I guess the people whining about Peter Cushing scared them off.

People miss the point. It's not Peter Cushing they're re-creating. It's Tarkin. I understand people who say the CGI looks fake and takes them out of the film, but the people who say the CGI is disrespectful to the diseased should've had a problem with him in TCW and Rebels as well.

I wasn't exactly going for a great doppelgänger, I wanted to come close though. Since Sarah Chalke began her career as New Becky on Roseanne, ... having her be New Leia...

Yeah, maybe it's just me.

This is what I'm saying. Carrie will always be Leia but the story must be served and honestly Carrie could not act anymore and she didn't sound or look like leia in 7. It will be a good thing for the part to be recast

Couldn't be any worse than Hayden Christensen's performance in AOTC and ROTS.

Yeah , Tarkin was badarse, and the CGI was great. Even Vader didn't mess with that dude, and their recreation of him was impressive.
