The Greatest American Hero

I looked into this gem from the 80s after seeing ESPN's use of the theme song for its College Gameday commercial, although I had heard the song before (40 Year-Old Virgin, George's answering machine message from Seinfeld). I've never seen any episodes, but it seems like a pretty cool concept for a movie:
Apparently Nathan Fillion has shown interest in playing the role:
Could this work in today's age of superhero films, or would it just get lost in the shuffle? Would it work better as a TV series reboot? Who would be a good fit for this kind of role?

it was a really fun TV series for the time

Everyone wants Fillion to play just about every character in everything....... Project never gets off the ground.

I've mentioned before that I think it would be great time for this to be rebooted. Put a little JJ Abrams/Fringe or Whedon/Firefly spin on it and you have gold.

I have fond memories of it as a kid, but I have a feeling if I watched it today I'd think it was super cheesy. I believe it's on NetFlix.
It might work as a family friendly movie. As a series, Chuck barely made it to 5 seasons as the Average Joe turned Superhero. Other than possibly being aimed more at a more family demographic than Chuck, I don't see why a superhero show would do any better.

I think just once. His last name was Hinckley. Bad luck for a show that came out not long before the Reagan assassination attempt.
It was a fun show but the premise was wearing thin. Not sure how you keep it going for years. Robert Culp was great in it, probably would work very well for Fillion in that role.

I can definitely see it being difficult to keep the jokes fresh week after week with this kind of premise. I think it would probably work better as a movie than a series, if at all.

I rewatched it a few years ago. It is still awesome, but like anything made it the 80's the cheese level is high.
Reboot would be good if they cast it well

Cheers is on Netflix now, too. My parents loved this show and it was syndicated pretty late, so I watched many episodes as a youngster, but couldn't fully appreciate most of it.
The writing for Cheers was awesome and still holds up. There's a reason some consider this ONE of the greatest sitcoms of all time, myself included.

Actually more of a tweener - the show ran from 1978 to 1982 - so does that make it a 70s or 80s show? For my tastes it has a slightly more 70s vibe, but as a music heavy show, and that music is strongly anchored in the 70s, that may skew it a bit.
Having said that - it is one of the best, most underrated shows in television history - the crime is worsened by the fact that because of the great music, so integral to the experience, cannot be optioned efficiently for a syndication package, there is no way to show re-runs of it without butchering it.
Truly sad that this wonderful show must exist with poorly edited in "substitute" music and no real prospect of that ever being corrected.
