One of the most factual "true story" movies ever made.
Military channel had it on a few years ago with interviews from some of the vets kept prisoner at the camp.

The changes to the story all seemed to revolve around McQueen. Adding the motorcycle for example
.
What I remember the most from watching that was the vets were very cool with the movie until the ending. The "happy" ending with Mcqueens character going back in the cooler pissed them off something fierce.
They said after the reading of the list of deaths and no casualties from the German Commanding Officer, that there was extreme bad blood between the men and the guards the rest of the war.
So, when McQueen comes back and the little upbeat march begins, that pissed them off to no end.

Love this movie. I am honestly surprised that Hollywood hasn't tried to do a star-studded remake of this. Not saying that I want them to, just saying that I'm surprised it hasn't been done.

There's no one that could fill any of the original actors' shoes. So why bother?

When has that ever stopped them from remaking a classic?

Apparently that film is really a lie. The IRL team (from the Ukraine) was executed for winning the game

People have to understand that the reason the book (published in 1950) was not filmed until 1963 was b/c studios looked at the facts -- 50 dead including the leader, only 3 successful escapees -- and believed no one would want to see something that depressing.

All the more lighthearted stuff was specifically conceived by director John Sturges as a sort of camouflage to disguise the basically downbeat nature of the story.

I love the soundtrack, but to go upbeat with that right after the announcement to the men. Yeah, that's pretty rough for anyone that was there.

But happy Hollywood ending!

I knew it was a trap when they got on that train. They should've made themselves like the guy who was riding the bike or the guys who took the boat down the river

Awesome movie and even better because of the men that lived it. While in college I dated a girl who's father was a survivor of that story. He sat in the tunnel and worked the air pump to provide fresh air to the guys digging the tunnel. He was transferred to a different barrack a couple of days before the escape so he didn't go out.

He was sent a copy of the book by the author but I don't believe he ever watched the movie. I knew him in 1977/78 and the man still got a migraine headache on the anniversary week of his being shot down. He did tell me that the guards were assholes, they would fire their weapons into the barracks for no reason. Said he weighed 98 lbs when they were liberated.

Switch Stalag 17 and Von Ryan’s and I can roll with that list.

My honorable mention add would be Empire of the Sun

For the longest time I had no idea that Richard Attenborough from Jurassic Park was "Big X". Dumb on me.

That being said, history aside, it is a very enjoyable movie. Maybe the best ensemble action/drama movie from that era.

60's -
Magnificent Seven
Dirty Dozen
The Guns of Navarone
The Flight of the Phoenix
