My main beef is the hero of the saga. As a kid, I had always thought DBZ was actually about the maturation of Gohan with Goku holding the torch. The point comes where the gets passed the torch and Gohan delivers. So you'd expect from this point on, Gohan would be the hero. Instead, Goku has to save the world again. Because of which, it lessens the value because "Goku vs." has happened several times before. It wasn't solely Goku who defeated Buu, but he's was very heavily involved.
Maybe it's because I am a big fan of Dragon Ball, but I just always assumed DBZ was about Goku. Gohan along with the others are supporting cast, regardless of how strong they are. Yes, they are apart of the adventure but in the grand scheme of things Goku was always the front runner, there is no DBZ without a Goku.
Maybe Gohan is your favorite character which is why you or others think the show should've ended with Cell or started with Gohan being the main character but we could argue that Piccolo could get the torch passed to him, or Vegeta. Logically from the perspective of the story line I'm fine with Goku coming back after Cell. I don't like Gohan becoming weak or all the new kids and the fusions. This is just my perspective.
ETA: A lot of the characters spit in the face of Goku regarding trust and values but it made Goku who he is.
