Operation Chastise on May 17 1943 was the RAF attack on 3 of the giant dams in Germany that provided Hydro electric power to the Ruhr Valley. The story is immortalized in 1955's "The Dam Busters."

Lucas pretty much copied the DB movie in the attack on the Death Star.

This is fairly well known. It may be news to some people.

In the real attack nineteen aircraft attacked. Seven were shot down. Due to the almost suicidal low altitude, 53 of the 56 crewmen in those aircraft were killed.

One of the sad things about the real attack. The Brits made a point to not draw atention to the dams beforehand. They just showed up one night with some 9,000 lb. bonbs to wreck the dams with. But the Germans were ready with a storm of fire.
