The Avengers vs Man of Steel

To me these are two comparable movies. They are both extremely limited and don't do anything interesting storywise, yet they give a fun/fresh take on a classic comic series and are certainly worth the time and money to see in IMAX.
Yet Avengers is overly praised while a lot of people dump on MoS. Can someone who likes one but not the other explain the difference to me?

That seems to be the case with a lot of these reboots.
It's okay on the one hand, because I know the characters, and I'd rather see some new stuff, but it's also kind of disappointing.

Simply put: Superman takes itself far too seriously, and tries to be more than it really is. Avengers doesn't.

Can you blame them? People don't want DC movies to be like Marvel. The last time DC tried to use the Marvel movie formula we got this

DC is kind of stuck. The nature of DC heroes is more morally serious than what Marvel puts out, but that is apparently not what this generation of ADD movie goers wants. They want Thor, The Avengers, and Transformers.
I'm facebook friends with people that thought Captain America was awesome. What do you even say to these people?

Easy.
Superman, from Christopher Reeve to Dean Cain to Welling, almost became a Soap Opera starring a Superhero. People, especially that mid 40's to baby boomer generation love their soaps.
So when you take the most iconic super hero ever, and make it what MoS did, there will be a split down the middle as to whether people will love or hate it.
I remember watching the Superman movies, as a kid, and literally fast forward to the action. It was sickening to hear dialogue like 'you are wearing pink panties'.."do you like pink?"...'oh, I like pink very much Lois.."
In Lois and Clark, I can't even remember a good episode, save for the time Superman got punched by a professional boxer and fell down lol!
By then, I was done with Superman. Did not watch any Smallville. Maybe a Netflix cartoon. And I watched Superman Returns, which, again tried to continue the Soap Opera (oh he had a son).
This movie paid a price, from a critic standpoint, but will pave the way for a great future and franchise. I've seen it twice and liked it better the second time.
Avengers never went through the soap opera bias of 40 years Superman did. They were free to entertain and dazzle as they pleased. Many felt Superman still had on obligation to romance

It's freaking Superman and Chris Nolan was involved. OF COURSE it took itself seriously. What did you expect???

It was a good popcorn flick. Not marvels best offering by any means, but far from its worst.

Captain America sucked fwiw.
Nolan is more to blame, inadvertently IMO, for DC being stuck now.
Batman Begins was PERFECT. It was simple, elegant, gave us a real world. Then he went off the deep end and over complicated the hell out of the story ruining the trilogy.
Along comes MoS and, though adequately awesome IMO, we get this forced poorly edited story thrown together that doesn't make much sense at parts.
You want a good example of a realistic dark comic book movie outside of Batman Begins? Watch The Crow. It's simple but effective. The focus is where it needs to be to have a great long lasting effect. That's why Batman Begins ages so well.

Green Lantern didn't use any Marvel "formula". It was a terribly written and directed movie that used horrible CGI.
The problem with DC is that it is still owned by WB.

That's exactly what they did and it was absolutely necessary. I won't post MOS spoilers here but there are drastic departures from Superman tradition, that WB had to know would get some backlash. Now they've "torn off the bandaid" they can move forward with this new direction. I'm eagerly anticipating this sequel more than most others in the past.
As far as GL goes, I really hope the Justice League movie does well and we get a sequel to that GL. While it wasn't a great origin movie or regular movie for that matter, the sequels have so much potential.

that's not really the critical issue of the movie. I loved the changes to be honest.
The technical/critical issues of this movie are:
1. Editing
2. Pacing
3. Forced parts of the story
4. Inconsistent characterizations WITHIN the story
Still a great movie, but it had issues.

There is a reason The Avengers and Man of Steel are being compared.
Man of Steel, while entertaining, is not better than any of the Marvel Phase 1 films, and is hardly better than the worst X Men film (and even that is debatable)

If you think about it, MoS started off as TDKR/BB and about an hour into it became Thor.

I detest Last Stand so much. It's definitely more personal than objective since I've been an Xmen fan since the mid 80's and a Cyclops fan to boot.
