The Art of Flight: Snowboard Documentary Review

Travis Rice leads a gang of professional riders into the backcountry of Alaska, Wyoming, Chile, Patagonia, British Columbia and Colorado in an attempt to bomb the most hair raising and unchartered lines on Earth.
First of all, the scenery is grand. The film was shot in HD and it shows.
Absolutely breathtaking footage. It reminded me of a National Geographic production.
All the audio tracks are in Dolby Surround 5.1 and even though I didn't recognize one single tune, the tracks sound like studio recordings.
Other sounds include helicopter blades, snow being crushed and pushed around and the riders yelling in both joy and pain.
In every scene, Rice and crew take snowboarding to new heights.
It's insane that amount of progression that has taken place in the last ten years and this movie depicts that perfectly.
After watching the first five minutes, I wanted to go ride.
The film is mostly narrated by Rice himself. He's poignant, concise and quite humble.
The Art of Flight is truly incredible and now there is one less copy floating around Redbox.

I watched this on repeat for about 3 weeks before I went snowboarding last march....
Great stuff and soundtrack.
But the best snowboard video is "91 Words For Snow". A few years old but so great.

91 Words can't touch the newer videos, sorry. High definition puts you on the peak, from your couch.
Jones' part in 91 is damn gnarly but he himself named a range out in AK 'The Wizard'. At the time of 91, even Jones wouldn't attempt a first descent of it.
Rice bombs multiple chutes on The Wizard in Flight. Jones is there watching and comments that 'Rice is the future and the future is now'.
Big mountain skills or hospital bills.

Most of those guys are born to live and die on top of a peak, miles high in the sky.
The big mountain riders are a different breed of animal than most of the pipe and park guys.
My love of charging hard and jumping off everything I can spawns from one thing - the sensation of flying.
Many times, Ive felt like I had cheated both gravity and death by achieving flight.

Well I watched 91 words when I was living in vail. So
Maybe my attitude is built off of having a soft spot for the movie.

I like Vail ok, but I enjoy Copper, Breck and Steamboat a little more.
Having a soft spot for Vail and an attached attitude is always worthy.
My top three big mountains are (in order):
Big Sky, MT
Jackson Hole, WY
Mammoth Mountain, CA
I cant wait for the opportunity to ride BC and AK.
AK is definitely on my bucket list.

I think The Naked & Famous have a song in that movie.

I have it on blu-ray and it's probably one of my favorite movies. Also, check out That's it, That's All, their first big time HD film. It's quite an amazing film.
