I’ve been reading comic books since I was a kid, and I’ve had my own Marvel Universe obsessions for years," Tarantino responded. "So I don’t really have a problem with the whole superhero thing right now, except I wish I didn’t have to wait until my 50s for this to be the dominant genre. Back in the ’80s, when movies sucked — I saw more movies then than I’d ever seen in my life, and the Hollywood bottom-line product was the worst it had been since the ’50s — that would have been a great time."

It's no surprise that Tarantino is one of the only fanboys in the business. The guys like film and he likes film that knows what it wants to be and goes for it regardless of needing to be high culture.

He gets it. Many, many people don't, especially those complaining.

If every single film out there was Schindler's List and There Will Be Blood, Movies would suck, plain and simple.

Side note: There are no more superhero films until May next year. At least no DC or Marvel U movies. Everything's going to be ok.

Way too broad of a generalization and I love 80's action films more than pretty much anyone.

If superhero movies were made in the 80s, they would have sucked and he would have a different comment on it.

The movies are working nowadays because you can have giant Eel spaceships send alien attackers to fight against The Avengers, and the majority of the CGI looks flawless to the average viewer.

Die Hard, Predator, The Thing, Escape from New York and aliens > any comic book movie

Yes, every single one of those movies is probably better than a superhero film, I agree (to a point).

However, American Ninja? Last Dragon? Dogs of War? The Octagon? Nighthawks?

Like I said, way too broad. The 80's action genre has some MASSIVE stinkers that are only fun because of how legitimately bad they are. And I owned American Ninja on VHS for years, but the film is terrible.

You are on a roll, Freaux.

Yes, the 80's generated some of the GOAT action/sci-fi films of all time. You also had some GOAT comedies. But as a whole, the 80's was a poor film decade. Thats what made the early 90's so awesome. It was a huge bounceback.

For the shitty generic films, but there were a lot of quality stories told through film in the 80s. Sure the special effects were still evolving, but I still prefer it over ridiculous and unnecessary amounts of cgi.

Sometimes feels like there are scales that are balancing things between decades. Now we can have great special effects..yet the story quality is lacking, or less chances are being taken in developments, etc.

You could say that about network TV, Movies, and Music right now. Everything is all about "MAKE ME MONEY NOW" rather than talent, content, or creativity. Why give a sitcom a chance to do something different and find an audience when you can make a reality show for pennies and get a guaranteed audience, even if only for a short amount of time?

Nobody is complaining that they are making superhero movies, they are complaining because almost all of them are painfully predictable, dramatically water down the characters in question (Ulton is exhibit A), and sacrifice the movie they are in to spend valuable screen time setting things up for other movies. I'm not going to bother with Thor 3 after how bad the first two were, so don't waste my time in Avengers 2 setting up some crap I don't care about.

Yeah but they also have some of the best action movies ever. That are not dumbed down by hours of cgi explosions

He's not saying they aren't great.

It's a comment that variety is one thing that makes movies so awesome. If every film were serious dramas like those two listed, then "movies" would basically suck because that's all we'd have to watch. We need things like comedies, horror, action, silly ridiculous over-the-top 80s movies, etc.

Even in vehicles. Designs are so similar or recycled, in entertainment there are copies of imitations. Feels like everything is slowly becoming the same.

It would make sense that he thinks movies sucked in the 80s
