SGU is very different in style and tone from Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, but it's still a solid scifi show. SG-1 and Atlantis are both fun action shows where the good guys from earth always win despite the odds being against them. Stargate Universe has more drama and less action, and unlike it's warm and fuzzy predecessors, a win for the good guys usually means being able to run away without anyone dying. One of the things I like about it most is it's more realistic. Aliens don't speak English, moving around in space is slow and dangerous, and supply management is an issue.

I still like the other SG series more, but I don't regret watching SG-U like many said I might and I wish they had made more than 2 seasons. Anyone who's avoided it because the M/TV board always takes a dump on it when the SG shows come up should give it a chance if they like space based scifi shows.

I only watched the first few episodes. I don't remember thinking it was that bad, but I didn't get that far into it. I remember someone posting something amusing a while back about "rape stones."

I'm currently working on my first complete watch through of the original SG1 series. I always used to just catch episodes randomly and out of order. Man there are some massive plot holes. Still having fun though. Maybe I'll look into SGU when I'm done.

Since you're watching SG-1, I'd watch Atlantis before SGU if you haven't already. There's lots of crossover between SG-1 and Atlantis.

TigerMyth will be here shortly with a thesis on how you are so completely wrong.

there would only be a handful of shows I could watch if I followed this criteria

In 2 years they had interaction with 3 other lifeforms. It was garbage and the opinion of the OP is henceforth irrelevant.

Almost no gate travel!

Repeated storylines. They couldn't show any aliens so the strife came from the crew rebelling. Then it came from the crew rebelling again. Then it came from the syndicate guys taking control. All boring human interaction repeated over and over.

The show was garbage.

It took 2 years to learn the characters names because they were too dull to pay attention to.

Big tit soldier was the only worthy character.

Hell, they never even fully explored the damn ship. If they wanted to pinch pennies, they could have had several episodes revolving around ship exploration like they did with Atlantis.

Don't even get me started on the rape stones.

I'm working so I didn't have time for a full double barrel hit on that garbage show which single-handedly killed off a franchise.

There is more humor in a single Teal'C eyebrow pop, than 2 years of SGU.

What's wrong with that? It's not like the milky way had tons of different intelligent species. You just ran into people every episode because the existing races used the stargates for colonization. The stargates were on mostly uninhabited planets in SGU, so space travel would be how you colonized. Space travel is expensive compared to gate travel so you'd expect less colonization.

So? They were trying to do something different. The show isn't about strike team missions against the enemy, it's about survival in space.

They really should have had better character development on a show with less action. I didn't say it was the greatest show, just that the M/TV consensus is wrong. While there probably should be a warning about expectations, there doesn't need to be an avoid at all costs label on it.

So?
Don't put STARGATE in the title if you don't plan to travel using one or meet any interesting cultures or do anything interesting at all...ever.

They tried to clone BSG and it failed.

Heck, they tried to clone BSG with the absolute worst part of BSG, the struggle for supplies. They left out the fun sexy robot part.

You should start watching Terra Nova and start a thread then.

I watched terra nova live when it aired but think I gave up after around 6 episodes or so. it was so long ago I don't remember how long I stuck around for

*Minor spoilers for the first episode*
They got onto the ship via a Stargate. They regularly gated down to planets for supplies. They were constantly trying to come up with plans to redial the 9th chevron. They even had quite a few appearances by SG-1 people. There were many legitimate reasons to put Stargate in the name of the show, including the stargate on the ship

Were they using the Stargate brand to try and copy what BSG was doing? Maybe, I can certainly see where they tried to make Dr. Rush like Baltar, the genius you need on your side but you never know where his loyalties lie. But taking your inspiration from another show doesn't make it a show nobody should ever watch.

It sucked.

They cancelled both SG1 and SGA to make SGU a reality?

Everything was a straight rip of BSG from Rush to the civilian / military struggle / supply struggle.

As I said, they took the boring parts of BSG with lesser actors / characters and they had none of the fun.

Hell, as bad as things were on BSG, there was more humor on that show than SGU.

And yes, humor was a big part of the appeal of Stargate.

Clearly the show was a dismal failure with 2 seasons and it killed production of both SG1 and SGA striaght to dvd movies.
