OMG ITS GOING TO BE THE BEST MOVIE EVAR. IF IT DOESN'T 100% CHANGE HOW I LIVE MY LIFE IT IS A FLOP.

I'm afraid that too many people are expecting this. My expectations are very tempered. If it can entertain me I'll be happy with it.

I think it will look fantastic and be better than the prequels.

That being said, I have serious doubt's about Abrams ability to create/bring to life an iconic villain. He's never really done it. The key ingredient to the original trilogy was Vader and the empire. Shadowy threats that remained hidden behind a mask or not overly explained so that the unknown was part of what inspired fear.

it's not about whether it will be good or not, it's how you will feel

It certainly won't be a flop, but I think some people will be disappointed if it isn't grounded in what made them love the first movies so much

I have low expectations, and so far everything we've seen or heard about it has been very positive. It will entertain, but for movie goers that have waited 35 years for another worthy entry, I can't blame them for feeling disappointment at the realization they may never get that.

I don't know how I'll feel until I see it obviously, and I don't really have expectations (that's what low expectations are right?)

but the thought that abrams will resurrect the greatness of the first two movies is what drives my interest in this movie. Otherwise it's just another blockbuster. Star Wars and Empire were more than that.

it was also the key ingredient of everything that sucked about the prequels.

It's how it's done that will matter. Vader is so great in empire...I saw it last night. Holy shite it's so fricking good. He's such a hands on and determined villain. He's also just so in command and exudes confidence whereas in the prequels he's a dumb shite that is tricked into being evil for 3 decades

"I want that ship, not excuses" just such a great movie

I am going in expecting it not to suck and for it to be a fun movie to watch. Nothing more. If it sucks I will be dissapointed, if it is pretty good I will be satisfied with seeing Luke, Leia, and Han again on the big screen. Anything better and the pants are coming off in the theatre.

Well don't start unbuckling just yet

quote:

When J.J. Abrams was hired on as the director, he and Arndt worked extensively on the script for a year. Then, somewhat abruptly, Arndt was removed from the project and Abrams took over screenwriting duties himself with Lawrence Kasdan acting as co-writers. Apparently Abrams and Arndt didn’t see eye-to-eye on how to proceed with this first installment in a new Star Wars trilogy, with Arndt wanting to focus on new characters and Abrams wanting to beef up the roles of the Original Trilogy actors (ie. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher) and make them a more central part of the story.

On the plus side Lucas has been complaining they trashed all of his ideas

My expectations are mixed for this film.

I agree that Abrams is faced with a bit of a juggling act here.

He has to usher in a new audience to the Disney Star Wars "brand" (multiple sequels, spin-offs, etc.) and also appease the traditional fan base that holds the original trilogy in such high regard.

I have avoided discussion/speculation of the plot in an effort to go into with a fresh perspective. However, I have to imagine that the original cast will be present only to "put over" the new cast for upcoming sequels.

I'm excited. Cautiously optimistic, but excited.

None.

Abrams = Ace will not watch

Fool me once, and all that.

If Lucas didn't care enough to do quality work on the prequels, why should I care what happens. My "canon" are the original, unenhanced, no CGI Jabba, no HC retconned into Jedi, ST:ANH, TESB and ROTJ, period.

I give no further consideration to other Star Wars products.

Thank you, please drive through.

I think the people that love the original trilogy should welcome new people on a new adventure

It didn't get the ending it deserves, but the adventures of han, Luke and leia are over. They should be used only as a vehicle to introduce and legitimize the new characters...maybe Luke still has a lot of story left in him, but you get the idea

Anyway, you put it much more succinctly than I did. A juggling act to be sure

Exactly. The prequels stripped away the mystery from Vader and the Emperor. That sucked. There is nothing more terrifying than a villain who's true nature and motivations are unknown, unknowable, or ambiguous.

Vader
Lechter
John Doe (Se7en)
The Joker
Michael Myers
Anton Chigurh

the list goes on and on.....

Despite my current state of relative intransigence, I have explored that possibility. But, at the end of the day, Abrams is dead to me. For that matter, so is Lucas.

I'm getting too old for this $hit.

It will be about on par with the Star Trek reboot. Should be ok but nothing special.

this is also what I am doing. I don't know shite about them beyond what's in the teaser. I don't want to hear anyone's thoughts before I see it or read a review

it's the best way to watch this movie without external factors shaping how you see it.

I got the sense that the black dude is very much a han solo type character...disguised as a storm trooper. It could be homage, ripping off or just a coincidence. I'm not reading into anything

ETA: his face in that 2 seconds is more emotion and a better piece of acting than anything in the prequels...I'm really hoping this movie does its best to disavow the prequels. I can block them out, but if they are intertwined with a movie with the original cast, god help us all

As long as Jar Jar Binks is heavily featured, I will be happy.
