*THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR*
Sorry guys - I was traveling and just didn't have the opportunity to keep this up.
Another episode I didn't care much for as a kid, but has grown on me. A fascinating battle - almost an internal conflict fully externalized. I still dislike the overemphasis on the dilithium crystals as a plot device in this episode, but, otherwise, I'm reasonably happy with it - and again, I appreciate Robert Brown's performance, particularly with the circumstances in which he was cast. (Trivia - Robert Lansing's real name was Robert Brown, but the actor who played Lazarus in this episode already registered the name with the Screen Actor's Guild.)
Lazarus was supposed to be played by John Drew Barrymore (yes THAT John Barrymore), but he never showed up and they had to recast the part the day of shooting.
And what about somebody else in charge of Scotty's engines?
Charlene Masters was

I thought this was a pretty good episode. The alternative universe is another recurring theme. This one was kind of straining the ability to over look the effects

Not one of my favorite episodes, although I liked the concept.
Lots of behind the scenes issues - not only the Barrymore situation, but they also dropped a romantic subplot between Lazarus and Masters, supposedly because Masters was black. That left a hole in the script that needed padding out.
The result of that padding was a slow-moving episode with lots of talking, Lazarus wandering around, and falling off cliffs.
I liked the ending, though. Sane Lazarus was quite a heroic figure.

It did seem a little repetitive. I might have plussed it up with a quasi sane "positive" Lazarus, perhaps in a lucid moment under medication, explain from his perspective what happened. Well, it's done now.

Yes - the ending really bailed out what had been an inconsistent, up and down plot up to that point. Really, the ending "makes" this particular episode, and the workman like effort put in by Brown under difficult circumstances.

I always liked the little ship Lazarus used, too.

I couldn't find what happened to it after the series, but the dome was re-used in Gamesters of Triskelion

*TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY*
We have our first accidental time travel in the Star Trek universe. This episode is interesting twist on the "fish out of water" theme, with 2 USAF personnel on the Enterprise, and Kirk interrogated by a 1960s era USAF lieutenant colonel.
It was fun, even though the plot was a little silly.

quote:
Capt. Kirk: All right, Colonel. The truth is, I'm a little green man from Alpha Centauri, a beautiful place. You ought to see it.
Lieutenant Colonel Fellini: I am going to lock you up for 200 years.
Capt. Kirk: That ought to be just about right.
It was fun, even though the plot was a little silly.

Fun, lighthearted episode.
Some classic Kirk-Fu exhibited on the base.
We can marvel along with the characters at the primitive computers.
The slingshot around the sun, which would later be used to travel through time in Star Trek IV, looks great remasterd.
Great teaser - I wonder how many people in the 60s thought they had the wrong channel until they saw the Enterprise in the sky.
No babe this episode, though.

Just for a few frames, we had this gal -
As this is her only known acting credit - almost certainly a Big Gene's Casting Couch (tm).

It's one of my favorites. I like it when he sees the chick in uniform.

I like how he was the mid-60s version of Kirk.

*RETURN OF THE ARCHONS*
The first time Kirk talks a computer to death - an interesting episode covering a generally benevolent, but over-controlling government.
While I like this episode, it is one of the weaker first season episodes, IMHO, as I think it was a little bit of failed execution of a good idea.
This is the first time Scotty is put in charge of the Enterprise and the first time Spock appears as a full commander.

Kirk refusing to obey the lawgivers so accustomed to being obeyed was classic Kirk.
Seeing McCoy brainwashed is pretty unsettling, particularly when he attacks Kirk. In fact, the whole mind-control aspect of this society gives me the creeps.
First mention of the Prime Directive.
Some questions are left unanswered in this episode. Just what is Festival? I assume some sort of mechanism to allow the populace to let off pent up emotion, though it was never explained.
Also, how did the guy the lawgivers killed die? Spock said the weapons were simple hollow tubes. Did Landru kill him directly? If so, then its remarkable any sort of underground movement could survive as long as it did.
Overall, I enjoyed the episode.

I like how you put that. I like to say if Kirk couldn't outright overpower an enemy he "tricks them to death", like in I, Mudd, his "logic was to be illogical."
