So watching people murder other people is something you are okay with your kids watching.

Star Fleet is not suppose to be militaristic.

It was a theme they touched upon in this movie.

Okay, good, as long as there's gayness in Star Trek, which was badly, crucially needed. I mean, who cares if the gay guy who played the original Sulu thinks it's a stupid idea? We need way more gayness and we need it right now.

You get hung up on the same shite. EVERY. frickING. TIME.
It's old, you don't like gays, blacks or women in your movies.
Honestly Sulu hugged a dude and walked off with him and a kid. It could have been his brother. It wasn't a big scene at all.

And look at where it got them with the Enterprise being destroyed, nearly a hundred lives lost, being captured by nutjobs and the starbase and millions of lives on it almost being destroyed and its corpse being used for god knows what else throughout the Universe.

This movie is a good example why Starfleet needs ships that are armed to the teeth, fully mobile and have thick hides.

But another theme unwittingly showcased in this movie is how utterly defenseless, unprepared and too trusting the Enterprise and StarFleet can be and it almost cost them big time.

They may have defeated Krall but he was one man who nearly brought down a massive federation star base and destroyed the Enterprise and he did it with the help of just a few lackeys and a robotic force.

And the funny thing is that federation will see nothing wrong with what transpired here and the folly of sending out what amounts to be hospital ships on exploring and peacekeeping missions.

meta critic has it at a 70%.

I thought it was a good movie, lots of solid action, everything else was decent.

Also Simon Pegg is a great actor

I guess you could say that star fleet is like the UN, their goal is to keep the peace in the universe.

Imagine a warship showing up at your planet armed to the teeth, and they come out and say we want to have peace with you.

Major Spoilers ahead

don't read further if you haven't seen the movie

Because Krall was a former star fleet captain, he had intimate knowledge of star fleet's weapon systems (sure out of date) and tactics (sure out of date) He can develop a weapon system that would be effective again star fleet ships.

The enterprise was pretty sturdy, the disk part of the ship crashed basically in tact on a planet's surface. These ships look like they are designed to take some damage.

edit: I agree with some of your points, but to the best of my knowledge the peace keeping idea in star trek has been pretty central to the show.

Remember the mission in the original and the recent movies. To search for new civilization and new species. As I said, it wouldn't be practical to that mission if they sent out a fully armed and shielded ship when dealing with unknown and possibly unstable alien civilizations

I no longer trust Rotten Tomatoes.

so now every movie has to throw their rotten tomatoes rating out there in the commercials?

Tells me I can't buy them as trustworthy.

The soon to be released movie with Meryl Streep, not released yet or even RATED yet, had a commercial air yesterday stating the movie got 91 or whatever on rotten tomatoes. It's not out yet, it's not rated yet. I know they have early previews critic showings etc but it's not out nor rated. How can it have a 91 %????

I can't buy anything people say anymore with all the bs social media crap. It's all crap and BS.

I am so close to being off the grid

Well again, the Federation was created based on the fact that everyone can co-exist. When they have external threats (like the romulans or Klingons) then they come together to repel said threat. Well armed star ships generally speaking are not necessary. The problem with the movies...is they show the "few" times when a threat is hostile and warships are necessary.

No one would pay 10 bucks to watch them survey an unexplored planet ;-)

according to some in this thread the enterprise is equivalent to sending a paper airplane against a battle ship.

Went and saw it tonight. Like others have said, the villain was atrocious, and there was some really dumb stuff that happened.

They ask a deep question, but don't really explore it past the surface. The whole thing was way shallow. Like others have said, feels like an action movie set in the Star Trek universe. Without a TV series to develop the chemistry and the characters themselves, the whole thing feels hollow.

Overall I give it 7/10

That describes every Star Trek film, especially those set in the Abramsverse.
