Watched for the first time this weekend. Basically an action flick, cool cgi, mindless movie.
Below average movie 2.5 stars
If you look at it as just an action movie 3 stars.

Way too many nods to the old crew. Let it go. Guess this was for old Star Trek fans that went to the movie.

But they made Sulu gay. So brave.

I would have said they were trying too hard if George Takei wasn't gay IRL.

Yet even Takei, who is a well know SJW loudmouthed twat, thought that they went to far with the whole gay Sulu thing.

That whole deal falls into the "So what?" category.

It's not like Sulu was some notorious poonhound in the series and movies. If anything he was pretty asexual and it wasn't until Generations that we got a quick throwaway line about him having squeezed out a daughter at some point.

I guess these new Trek movies are such a mess, the Sulu gay thing is just another layer to the shitcake they've built.

Really? I have only watched about 45 minutes, the only part I saw was pretty quick. I am now assuming I will see more than just that when I finish it.

Honestly, my friends and family get sick of me railing on these movies when they come on. Don't even get me started on Into Darkness and the shoehorning of Khan.

I liked the new one with new Khan. It's been a while but I thought that one was a good movie.

I wasn't trying to start an "all the new movies suck thread"

I was pleasantly surprised by this film.

And the Sulu being in a gay relationship didn't bother me as much as they just ASSUMED he would be in a gay relationship with another Asian. I mean shite, why does he have to be Asian?!?!? Why does he have to be human?!?!? Goddamn speciephobes must've written this hateful film.

But in all seriousness, it didn't bother me and it wasn't an agenda--it was tasteful and not over-the-top. Takei is gay in real life, kinda made sense if they absolutely had to make a character gay. Hell, new Spock is gay in real life too and he's hooking up with Uhura still.

I think the new Star Trek trilogy has been highly entertaining. That's all I've ever known regarding Star Trek but I enjoy them. Just fun turn your brain off Sci-Fi flicks

My family refuses to discuss my opinion on the terrible, G-dawful, 2009 so-called "Star Trek" film. Sounds like that was the best of the bunch, but I'll never know. Star Trek had a good, almost 45 year run. The TNG films notwithstanding, pre-2009, that was a fantastic science fiction franchise.

Yup. This is why the Plinkett Star Trek reviews resonate so much with me.
