I remember hearing Artie Lange and Nick DiPaolo's show years ago and they both said they only considered The Sopranos a comedy when they first saw it. Both of them having great comedic minds and both being of Italian descent, they said it never dawned on them it wasn't just a black comedy until they found out it was classified as a drama by the public and critics.
I always found this fascinating, that a show everyone considered only a drama with a bit of dark humor, these two successful comedians only considered it a comedy.

I consider The Sopranos a black comedy/dramedy. The over-the-top portrayals by many of the gangster actors AND the effusive comic moments go beyond mere relief. Pine Barrens is a consensus "best episode" choice of fans, and it is a humorous riff on the comic assassination of Rasputin (at least the legend).
So, it's dramedy at best, but more accurately a black comedy, with strong roots in family situation comedy. The acting, particularly by Gandolfini, was just better than one expects from a family situation comedy, and crime/murder is not easily comedy fodder.

I love the scene where Paulie stops in the neighborhood where they guys are cutting tree limbs then grabs a shovel, whacks the guy holding the rope which releases the other guy and he falls.....then Paulie proceeds to put his lawn mower in the trunk of his cadillac.....that's some gangster shite

The Pine Barrons episode when Bobby comes in dressed up in full hunting gear and Tony loses it laughing...
The backstory is the crew knew it had to make Tony laugh so off camera Bobby carried in a huge dildo as a surprise.

Unrelated, but I was always a little surprised that Bobby didn't "mysteriously" wind up missing after he beat Tony up on his birthday.

If any of the other crew had been there to witness it he probably would have.

Tony got back at him by having him carry out the hit later on in that episode.

So many great scenes mentioned already. One satisfying one I haven't seen yet is when Tony lets Furio loose on the guy and his chink wife who weren't up to speed on their payments. That was epic.
