Now THIS is worthy category for Mr. Hackman.

I'll go with Ben Braddock/Ratso Rizzo over Tom Hagen and Popeye Doyle

Hackman
Duvall
Hoffman
Definitely in that order .
Or definitely in some other order.

Duvall. He has the best filmography out of the three and he's still going strong at age 86 while the other two have either retired (Hackman) or slowed down considerably. Duvall's consistency and longevity over the years is just incredible.

Duvall for Lonesome Dove alone.

I think Duvall also gave the best performance of any one of the three with The Apostle.. and that's fricking saying something.
Not only do I believe it to be his perosnal best (followed closely by Tender Mercies and Apocalypse Now) he being the director and writer of the that film was just an absolute incredible feat of artistic talent and work.
The final 20-plus minutes of The Apostle is maybe the best acting I've ever seen.

Hackman
Duvall
Hoffman
No argument on the filmography - Duvall's is incredible and I'm sure NOBODY can touch it. But I still think Hackman was the better actor. I can't see Duvall playing Little Bill or Lex Luthor or Harry Caul.

Duvall and Hackman definitely outworked Hoffman - Hoffman not nearly the supporting actor the other 2 were - Midnight Cowboy notwithstanding.
I go with Duvall here - the sheer quantity of quality work is overwhelming. And I'm a big fan of Hackman.

I can - but not quite as well.

Lex Luthor
Hackman ruined this for anyone else - and he did so that was a deviation from the traditional comic character to boot.

Harry Caul.
Yeah, probably not, but we can reverse this - Hackman wouldn't have been right for Kilgore, Gus McCrae or another half dozen roles that Duvall nailed.

True, but Hackman can't pull off Colonel Kilgore or Gus the way Duvall did either.
I really don't care for Apocalypse Now, but Duvall made Kilgore awesome. He struts around the battlefield with bombs going off unflinching. Martin Sheen narrating "you just knew he was going to get through this without so much as a scratch on him". And of course, "Charlie don't surf!"

Thank you for the dinner and a very pleasant evening. Have your car take me to the airport. Mr Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news at once.

Hackman-he can own a scene like no one.
Duvall
Hoffman
But it's choosing among the elites. However way you choose, it's all good.

In 20 years when some young ignorant kid tell you that he's too young to know who Robert downy Jr or Mathew McConaughey, then you'll know how we feel.

Lee Marvin, "You eat guts?"
Hackman, "Yep, I like'em."

I prefer more of Duvall's characters
But Rainman was a great performance.
