The Searchers. It's the greatest Western film by the greatest Western director and actor of all-time, John Ford and John Wayne.

How about you just search instead of hanging up the phone, pilgrim.

Its been a long time since I have seen The Searchers... Its interesting that The Searchers is held in high regard today more so than at its release which is not unusual.

Personally I would vote The Big Country(Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives).

I recently watched Stage Coach(John Wayne) and just remember when it ended thinking awesome movie.

In the last 30yrs, Unforgiven is the best though.

Both are extremely good.

The Western Genre is so rich. So many really great films in it. More than most other genre film categories.

Would Tombstone count as Western?

Tombstone, but you could say I am a little biased because it is my all-time favorite movie

Great list. Add Shane to it and you're probably complete.

If there's a few "modern" westerns I'd add it would be:
Unforgiven
Silverado
Quigley Down Under
Open Range

Wow

My top three are probably Shane, High Noon, and Unforgiven. Liberty Valence is a great movie. I love Leones series.

Oddly enough I don't really enjoy the Searchers. I prefer Wayne's True Grit. I actually like his war movies better than his westerns. My grandfather loved westerns and introduced me to them when I was a kid. He had probably seen more obscure movies than I could ever recall. He was not a John Wayne fan.

Unforgiven is my favorite, but greatest western ever made? I'd say Once Upon a Time in the West.

My candidates:

The Searchers

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Outlaw Josey Wales (arguable - is this a western, or a Civil War film? I think ultimately, it is a western.)

High Noon

Shane

Unforgiven

Red River

The Wild Bunch

Once Upon a Time in the West

Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid

ETA: Tombstone

So - as I've often argued that Shane is the best western film with neither John Wayne nor Clint Eastwood - that would suggest we narrow the list to:

The Searchers

TGTBATU

Unforgiven

Josey Wales

Red River

Shane

But, I also need to add Once Upon a Time in the West, as I think it is equal to Shane (if not better) - I have appreciated it more as I've gotten older.

Here is where my bias gets me - although I recognize their importance as western films, neither The Searchers nor Red River are particularly my favorite Wayne films. I would go with one of the Rios, The Shootist, or even She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (the only cavalry trio film in color).

And, as far as Clint - Josey Wales is my absolute favorite film of his and my favorite western film.

AFI says The Searchers is the greatest western film.

Not saying it's even in the Top 20 but Appaloosa was a pretty decent flick.

I know I am not going out on a limb here, but the Good the Bad and the Ugly is not only one of the best westerns, but I have it in my top 5 movies across all genres.
