Why is it such a cult favorite?

Because it's the perfect mix of sci-fi and western. It was made on a shoestring budget.
Oh yeah, and it's freaking amazing

Because it is awesome. If you don't like it, you're not awesome.

If that is true, then you shouldn't have to ask:

So..
When Book is shot and they need to visit an Alliance ship to save his life and this occurs..
Alliance: We're not an emergency clinic.. (paraphrasing)
Book: Here is my ID card.. (weakly)
Alliance: Get this man to the infirmary immediately.. (upon realizing who he is)
Book returns to the Serenity later and no one questions him on who he actually is? Especially Alliance hating Reynolds?

Because the mainstream is stupid...
I think it is overrated by the Brown coats, but a very solid scifi series that ended before it's time.

I wondered about this part too, but Book's relation with the Alliance is never really given.

Do you think its an average show? It being really good and it getting canceled so early adds to the cult favorite thing.

Yeah, you can't complain about their not revealing everything on account of it only lasting one season. Whedon was coming off of Buffy, which lasted I think 57 seasons, so I'm sure he was just putting off the mystery for later, assuming there would be a S2. Sure, he could have gotten into it in Serenity, but it may not have gone with the flow of the film.

Cook continually says that Reynolds needs to just leave him alone and not ask or pry into his background... Reynolds, though he hates the alliance, doesn't break bonds and truly likes Cook, so he never prys? Seems ok to me?

I wanted one episode that dealt with the Alliance history.
Their flag alone makes me wonder what led to the alliance? And why do we hear Chinese spoken, but never see any asian alliance members?

No, Firely is actually good. And aimed at adults, not overgorwn children trapped in permanent adolesence (sorry, I really f'n hate anime)
Book dodges the questions whenever Mal brings it up. And part of his fare is no questions. Mal's a criminal, he can't expect total honesty from his fares.
