Most Christians probably didn't even noticed or understand these "slights", by Cosmos and Tyson

The Dark Ages weren't that dark.

re: So Cosmos is more atheistic rant than actual cosmos?

The Roman Catholic Church takes no official position on evolution, and is in fact very friendly to the theory. It is American Evangelicals who are so dogmatically opposed to the idea, moreso than anyone in the world. It is they who push ridiculous bills through legislatures trying to mandate the teaching of creationism, not Catholics.

All of this boils down to the Bible. Evangelical protestants long ago went "all in" on Biblical inerrancy. They did so before the amazing scientific discoveries of the last 50 years, which has in many ways passed them by and made their beliefs that much more stretched.

The Catholic Church does not believe the Bible is historically inerrant, and it does not believe the Bible is the sole deposit of divine revelation. Therefore, it is very easy for the church to buy into scientific advancement without surrending its fundamental dogma.

very impressive.

This thread is like the polar opposite of Duck Dynasty threads where everyone is "just happy to see a show with good family values".

I don't get my history from Family guy so I know the "Dark Ages" weren't started or perpetuated by the church. If anything, the church was a beacon to guide peoples hopeless lives through the period.

Plus, I don't believe the rise of the Catholic church in western Europe affected learning, culture and knowledge in eastern Europe, the middle east, or in Asia.

So, someone enlighten me on how they should present concepts such as evolution in a way that wouldn't offend fundies hell bent on ignoring overwhelming mountains of proof...

Well, IMO just talking about evolution shouldn't offend anyone. If there are indeed subtle jabs at the church while doing it I could understand being offended though. I haven't seen the 2nd episode yet to make a judgement.

Speaking of...wasn't the animation of showing evolution the same animation used in a Family Guy episode? I know I've seen it somewhere before...

I also know the history of science is a history of thinking that something is known and then realizing maybe they were basing that off of incorrect observations.

right, and then they adjust accordingly. which isn't always the mindset of the church historically. and bc of that i think it's a reason that pope frances (sp?) has gained such recent popularity.

I think it is awfully arrogant of anyone to say decisively this is the way things are and that's just it.

i totally agree

really liked NdGT as a host. You could tell he was really getting emotional at the end when speaking about Sagan and that day together. That anecdote really wrapped the show up nicely.

agreed again

I'm a believer but couldn't care less about them taking swipes at the church. A church and its dogma have nothing to do with God IMHO.

The show is not doing well ratings wise. Resurrection is pulling twice as many viewers in that time slot.

Thought it might've been. Been a long time since seeing the original. Pretty sure the most recent I saw it was a Family Guy ep tho. Thanks

Wasn't so much "the church" as it was pseudoscience known as ID. Unfortunately, ID is propagated by the religious right, so they get offended because they feel like they are being attacked....I saw the segment as a way to discredit the ID stance and to give more indepth reasoning into how something could've formed (e.g. human eye) detailing the mechanics of evolution by natural selection. Glad they went with the human eye rather than a banana or a container of peanut butter that hasn't magically grown an elephant tree

If you think the Dark Ages were only caused by the Church I would have to think you are living in your own personal Dark Age.

In fact some monks helped keep knowledge alive by copying manuscripts of Greek and Latin writers, both pagan and Christian so that later generations could have access to it.

Well, hopefully it will reach enough people to inspire few to devote themselves to careers in science and keep intellectual progress going instead of regressing.
