quote:

THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE tells the true story of the 1961 siege of a 150-member Irish U.N. battalion under Commander Patrick Quinlan by 3,000 Congolese troops, led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining companies.

Anyone else watch this? I did enjoy.

I found it kinda tame as far as war movies go but it seems pretty historically accurate

Interesting read about the siege and aftermath. The movie does appear to be an accurate depiction of events.

It was decent and entertained me. It's not groundbreaking, but I don't think it was going for that at all. It got me to look in to the history, which was more the point of the film.

SPOILERS

I am pretty amazed that no Irish were KIA. If the movie is even remotely accurate, they took a beating and held their position with intelligence and courage. Kind of sad how they hung them out to dry on both the battlefield and at home.

Finally caught this (had it on my NF list for a while now).

Really good movie. I agree that it's nothing groundbreaking and it actually fairly tame for a "war" movie, but it is really solid and the story is a good one.

I'd recommend it to someone looking for a nice watch on NF.

Here is the Wiki link on the conflict: LINK

Spoilers:

Yeah, it's pretty incredible that not a single Irish soldier died in the siege. That shite lasted six days, and supposedly they killed anywhere from several hundred to a few thousand enemy soldiers/mercs. That is impressive. Especially from a group that had never seen battle before.

Also, crazy that their place in history got pretty fricked over. I'm glad to see they are finally getting some recognition in the last several years.

I'm glad they portrayed Dag Hammarskjöld's death as suspicious since there is a decent chance that he was murdered.

Watched it a while back. It was ok. Kind of cheap feeling, but it wasn't bad either. Interesting story. Just not the most well put together movie.

Incidentally, I this is the only time in recorded history that the Irish fought someone that wasn't the British.
