So you have to be an animated movie or something to do with comic books to put something on the big screen these days. Oh wait--Or you can have the 7th or 13th sequel to the original.

Or, maybe Hollywood is just lazy and would rather regurgitate crap than trying something new.

Lucky for you there's a fresh new innovative movie series out right now called Roots. It's on most channels. Nothing like it has ever been done.

More indie is stuff is being made than you realize. It may not play in theaters, but who cares? The only movies that really gain from theaters are action-adventures, science fiction, and animated films.

Ex Machina is as good on the small screen as it was on the big screen. Creativity is actually at a very high level, you just have to look around.

Just since 2014:
Ex Machina
The Martian
The Revenant
Sicario
Hateful 8
Straight Outa Compton
Spy
Steve Jobs
Me and Earl and the dying girl
The man from uncle
Gone Girl
Interstellar
Birdman
Nightcraweler
Babadook
Fury
American Sniper
The Imitation Game
Frank
The Nice Guys
Hail Ceasar

That averages about 1 solid original movie every 2 months over 3 years.

For some reason you hate all animated movies, but there have been some amazing ones as well.

Would you like to admit your blind ignorance?

I just saw The New Guys yesterday. Wasn't animated, no comic book references and not a sequel. There are other options.

Before that the last new movie I saw was The Invitation.

It's like people who complain about the state of music today...where are they looking?

So you haven't seen all the other post about people bitching about the exact same thing and being replied to with all the original movies or were you just happy to add one more to your post count?

I think the past decade or two have been more of a golden age in television rather than the big screen.

So you have to be in the theaters or something to be movie quality entertainment? Movies used to be special in that their budgets and the structure of hollywood at the time (actors did TV or Movies, not both) gave them exclusive/superior access to both production (special effects) and talent. Those walls have come down, as has the level of superiority of a theater screen over the home TV. Game of Thrones spends about $60 million per season. Breaking Bad spent $30-$40 million per season. I don't know what you think you're missing, but maybe it's on TV.

The ginger had 2 great sci-fi movies in a little over a year. About Time (a weird, family dramedy/romcom/time travel film) is fantastic as well.

There are good films out there, if you look.

In Bruges, In The Loop, Last King of Scotland, District 9, Moon are all within the last 10 years.

It's an homage to The Rockford Files. Too derivative for the OP.

HE WANTS ORIGINAL CONTENT.

In the 40's and 50's it was war movies and westerns. In the 60's it was the end of the studios and the proliferation of independent movies. In the 70's it was disaster films, the 80's it was teen movies, and on and on.

There are always genres that dominate at the theaters. We've always had to pick around them.

There are plenty of non-tentpole options in theaters on a regular basis. In just the first half of 2016 I've seen- in theaters in Baton Rouge- Midnight Special, Sing Street, The Nice Guys, Hail Caesar, Keanu, Hateful 8, The Witch, Everybody Wants Some, and The Revenant. I'll go see The Free State of Jones when it comes out.
None of those are comic book or cartoon movies or sequels. With the exception of The Revenant, all of them are original, unadapted stories.

Of course, I've also seen other movies like the ones you're complaining about (Deadpool, BvS, XMen, CW, Jungle Book.... I might be spending too much money seeing movies), but I understand what to expect from these and view them willingly.

There are plenty of options out there, if you think you're being unavoidably inundated by comic book movies, animated movies, and sequals, well- you're probably just not seeking out anything better.
