Italian helmer Stefano Sollima is in talks with Lionsgate to direct the sequel to Sicario. The film will be called Soldado, the Spanish word for soldier, and will center on Benicio Del Toro's character.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that a follow-up was in the works based on a Taylor Sheridan script with the hope that Denis Villenueve, who directed the first film, would return for the sequel.

Green Room helmer Jeremy Saulnier was the frontrunner to land the Soldado gig once Villeneuve's schedule became too packed, but he couldn't make the dates work given the film's fall production schedule.

James Brolin will be back as a CIA agent who plays both sides of the fence in the American war on drugs. Emily Blunt, who starred in the first film as a righteous FBI agent, will not return.

Sollima, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein, is best known for directing the Italian miniseries Gomorra.

The sequel is being produced by Basil Iwanyk, Black Label’s Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill, and Edward McDonnell. Lionsgate and Black Label are co-financing.

While I thought blunt was good in it I'm very happy to hear they wanna focus on Del torro's character

He was a fricking animal just ruthless as hell how he did the cartel kingpin and his fam at the end oh yea and he pulled some crazy shite on blunt

I love Blunt, but that role was just not for her.

And the character shouldn't be in a sequel anyway.

Don't think this movie is necessary but I'll watch for Del Toro. Losing Villaneuve is a bigger deal than losing Blunt. Hopefully the new director is good.

Absolutely. No way she would get involved with Brolin and Del Toro's characters again.

FIFY

ETA: Movie was fine, it just doesn't need a sequel. You're right about Blunt. The talk about wolves was pretty blatant. It's the land of the wolves, and you can't survive if you're not a wolf... Or a shepherd, I guess, if you're a good guy.

I can't see how Blunt would be necessary to the sequel, so it's not exactly a big loss.

Kind of an unnecessary sequel.
