Sesame Street, and HBO, the nation’s leading premium cable network, today announced a new partnership that will make the next five seasons of the iconic series available on HBO and its multiplex channels, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and the new internet only SVOD service HBO NOW. As a key part of the deal, Sesame will be able to produce almost twice as much new content as previous seasons, and for the first time ever, make the show available free of charge to PBS and its member stations after a nine-month window.
“Our new partnership with HBO represents a true winning public-private partnership model,” said Jeffrey D. Dunn, Sesame Workshop’s CEO. “It provides Sesame Workshop with the critical funding it needs to be able to continue production of Sesame Street and secure its nonprofit mission of helping kids grow smarter, stronger and kinder; it gives HBO exclusive pay cable and SVOD access to the nation’s most important and historic educational programming; and it allows Sesame Street to continue to air on PBS and reach all children, as it has for the past 45 years.”
In addition to the next five seasons of Sesame Street, Sesame Workshop will produce a Sesame Street Muppet™ spinoff series, as well as develop a new original educational series for children. HBO has also licensed over 150 library episodes of Sesame Street. The new episodes will begin airing as early as late fall 2015, and HBO will be the exclusive, first-run subscription television distribution partner for Sesame Street and the new series. HBO will have the right to air all series in both English and Spanish. All new series will also be made available to PBS and its member stations after the first window. Episodes of Sesame Street will continue to be made available, uninterrupted, as part of the PBS KIDS service on PBS member stations.

Childrens programming is the last thing I think of when I think of HBO. Is HBO trying to become NetFlix after NetFlix has spent the past several years trying to become HBO?

HBO should have gone with something like Avenue Q instead. Fits better.

Sounds good to me. I got three kids. Although I don't really see why it's a great deal for HBO.

HBO Family airs a bunch of programming in the morning aimed at younger children. Sesame Street will be a huge improvement over Crashbox reruns IMO.

But anyone who has HBO already has access to Sesame Street, that's all I'm thinking. I'm

Yes. I remember a quote from the one of the top guys at Netflix a couple years ago where he said, "The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us." Netflix has known for several years that they needed the oringal content to compete in the future. HBO has been trying to model it's future business after Netflix to a large degree. Netflix has programming for all ages, especially kids. HBO is trying to fall in line.

pretty much everyone with a TV can get PBS sure but now HBO will get the first run of the new episodes several months in advance. Since they got the rights to 150 more episodes I'm assuming they will be putting all of this content on HBO Go. Now parents w/HBO are not going to have to worry about DVRing SS for their kids. They can just fire up the HBOGo app.

I'm sure other platforms have it, but I know Apple TV has a PBS Kids app with Sesame street already.

I don't like this at all. HBO will do a fine job, and they've had children's programming before, including Fraggle Rock, one of the best children's programs ever made. But the whole point of Sesame St is to have programming aimed at poor, inner city youth. Putting this behind a paywall is awful, as it puts it out of reach of the people who most need free, quality children's broadcasting.
Shame on Sesame Street. Unless HBO is providing this show for free, this is a sad day. They are making the show the province of rich kids.

I get SS through the free PBS app and through Hulu. I have Roku. It's cool that HBO will get it too though. I just wouldn't think it'd attract new subscribers.
