Saving Mr. Banks not what I expected.

Spoilers ahead.
As an Admitted Disneyfile, I was expecting something mildly dramatic but with a typical happy uncle Walt message ending, but what went on in this film really messed with my sense of equilibrium.
Flashbacks to PLTravers childhood interspersed with the Disney people coercing, seducing, and bullying her to let go of the beloved Mary Poppins she created so they could Disneyfy it made for a very uncomfortable experience. And I loved that movie as a kid, still do.
Wanted to hate Travers and ended up simply feeling sorry for her.
Not sure how I feel about Disney but watching him psychoanalize her in her own home had me squirming.

IRL Walt was a piece of work. You don't build a mega corporation from scratch without being driven and a little sociopathic.

Walt was way ahead of his time. He was using modern-day cut throat business practices in an era that didn't really work that way. He was one of the greatest minds this world has ever known though. That's why he got away with it.

I was bored as shite and had already seen all the other movies I wanted to when I went to this show. I really ended up liking it. I was shocked.

If you still want to hate on Travers, read up on her. She did some shite things in her life.

Honestly, I didn't feel it necessarily glorified Walt Disney. It was pretty straightforward that they were bullying her to give them the rights. Hell, they put in that the thought of going to Disneyland was sickening. If they were truly trying to whitewash the whole affair, I don't think they would have included that.
I would recommend you listening to her on the tapes over the end credits- she wasn't exactly pleasant in those. If she hated how Disney wanted to adapt the book, she could have found another studio who was interested in buying the rights. Basically, she needed the money, and Disney was the one willing to pay it. Quite frankly, I may have seen the movie once or twice and never read the books, but I can still remember the songs.

Just got back from seeing it. It was GREAT! Everyone was perfect for their roles and delivered them well. All of the praise that Colin Farrell has received is warranted (as well as Thompson & Hanks [perfect Disney]). Worth the watch, definitely!

My wife and I loved this movie. A bunch of unexpected parts in the movie made it all the better.

I haven't seen the movie, but Travers hated Mary Poppins, the film. She felt it destroyed her books and when she sold the rights later in rights to Broadway, she insisted they couldn't have anyone work on the play who was involved in the movie.
Now, some of that is that they softened the character of Mary Poppins and made the story more "American" (British children's stories tend to be a little more emotionally brutal, with no guarantee of happy endings like the stories American kids tend to grow up on). But some of that is the simple jealousy that Disney's Mary Poppins was so successful, it became the definitive Poppins, overshadowing her own creation.

No. He was hugely anti-communist
Many Jews worked for him, and had mostly good things to say about him. Several left him, only to return to work for him at a later time
