It's always portrayed as this fun disco dance movie, but if you actually watch all the way through its really pretty dark and gritty. Tony is really a piece of shite, especially to women, his friends are losers, his family is crazy and the movie ends with their buddy falling/jumping off a bridge.

This one of those movies that great marketing, a couple famous dance clips, and a fun soundtrack distort what the movie is really about and the true darker tone of the film. It really reminded me of a movie like Magic Mike which was marketed as some chic flick male stripper movie, but was actually a dark, gritty relationship movie where the main character is really kind of a sad.

Yea, it was not full of good people. LOL. The story was kind of bla as well. But if you lived then, you loved it. The music, lights and occasional hot arse drew you in and sold it to you.

Everyone in that show was screwed up.

Travolta really had one of the most incredible runs. He was at the helm of the disco craze, then launched an entire new craze with Urban Cowboy (former discos literally converted to honky tonks), and added the most successful musical of all time with Grease. That's hard to top culturally.

Agreed, his first run is so unbelievable. The cultural impact and lasting legacy of those 3 movies and as you said the real life phenomenons they created is probably unmatched. I always thought his second run was better from say 1994-2000ish, but when you look at really look at it...it's no contest...quality over quantity.

The way that movie sold the music to people was how it was juxtaposed as an escape from the harsh, unpleasant realities that the story presented.

Again though. Just like in the OP. All the people in that movie are fricked up.

Except the old uncle that dies. He's just a good ole Baw. But everybody else is shitty and fricked up. Drunk, degenerate, woman beaters.

Pasadena had to be an insufferable place to be at around 83-85. Lots of brand new Cowboys.

The movie did give rise to a term I've long used, "Houston Proper".

Like Pasadena and Downtown were that far?
