There might be some credibility this time to these rumors, however, as the news comes from MakingStarWars.net - a credible website. They are citing multiple sources:

quote:

As of now, there are no specific details on the re-release of the Star Wars original cuts. As of now, it’s not even clear if they’ll be re-released in theaters or only on home video, but MakingStarWars.net firmly believes that the unaltered original cuts of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will be officially re-released this year in honor of the first movie’s 40th anniversary.

Fingers crossed. But I'll believe it when I see it.

George Lucas must've had a stroke if this is true.

I would be shocked if the king of creating artificial scarcity in media did not cash in on the original versions of Star Wars.

Dude's gonna be pissed. It will be glorious.

Sidenote, considering how much I love/hate that guy, this user name makes less sense all the time. I might as well have chosen JarJarP.

But then no one on here would take you seriously. Oh wait, nevermind.

Maybe this will finally help people see the classic editions are not some holy grail. We are talking about 2-5 minutes of extra footage/audio per film if that.

I'd like to own a blu ray copy of the classic OT, but I don't see them as being vastly superior to the special editions. I think the special editions improve much more than they harm.

So Han break dance dodging Greedo's blaster shot and Jar Jar screaming "mesa free" at the end of Jedi, those improved the movies in your eyes?

The frick they aren't. I like my Tie Fighters with black squares around them and I like my Tattooine dry and lifeless, without a bunch of CGI creatures lousing up the place.

Nostalgia is a real and good thing.

Worth it just to see Sebastian Shaw at the end of Jedi instead of Hayden and get the original soundtrack back.

Not to mention the Jaba scene with Han stepping on the tail of a ruthless killer like it was no big deal.

And the "Jedi Rock" in Jaba's palace. I just threw up in my mouth thinking about that.

Vader yelling "Nooooo" as he picked up the emperor was so unnecessary. The internal struggle he was having was shown perfectly. No dialogue was needed to convey what he was going through in that moment. It's my favorite scene from the OT. That edit has ruined it for the most part.

I love what the special editions did to cloud city and the Emperor being Ian McDiarmid and not whatever the frick creature played him in Empire, but I don't like:
-the Sarlaac pit having a head
-the shitty CGI monsters walking around Mos Eisley
-Han dancing around Greedo's blast
-Han stepping on Jabba's tail
-the rock music
-the NOOOOOO
-Hayden at the end of Jedi

I would bring my daughter just to see it in a theater..having said that, I saw them all in the theater when they were released..can't see them through the eyes of an 8 year old again.

I believe it when I see it but hope it's true

What that sack of shite did to JEDI was atrocious.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with cleaning up the images; like someone said the Tie Fighters. That was a big improvement.

I remember learning that somebody had improved the space imagery in the original Star Trek series, too... they didn't alter any storylines, they just put a nicer and more realistic "space" around the Enterprise.

But Lucas really screwed things up by adding in a bunch of extra stuff.

Couldn't disagree more, and if you can get your hands on the Harmy Despecialized cut, I think you'd switch over from the dark side that is your opinion.
