You guys are misremembering quite a bit because the reviews for all three Lord of the Rings films were stellar. The critics gushed over these films:
The Fellowship of the Ring: 92% on RT, average rating 8.1/10
The Two Towers: 96% on RT, average rating 8.4/10
The Return of the King: 94% on RT, average rating 8.6/10
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: 71% on RT, average rating 6.6/10
The Fellowship of the Ring: 92% on RT, average rating 8.1/10
The Two Towers: 96% on RT, average rating 8.4/10
The Return of the King: 94% on RT, average rating 8.6/10

No we are not. I knew they would critique this movie 10x times tougher than they would LOTR. All the bad reviews are saying they don't like the 48FPS. I wasn't going see it in that anyone. The movie will be spectacular. They are judging these movies the same as say they are judging the new bond film.

I will freely admit that I just "dont get" this genre
I dont get the RPG's, the movies, the novels, LARPing, etc.
I do not understand the appeal.
Same.
To outsiders, LOTR is fine - interesting enough - but nothing epic. The plot is simple, spelled out from the beginning and then it's...Wizard of Oz...or Alice in Wonderland...lets watch all the strange creatures/fighting/fairies they encounter along the way the JT Hobbit-brick road.
...to keep viewers interested about the endless walking.

It wouldn't have won Best Picture in this genre if it was what you said.

Yeah cause Bain death was so awesome.
Better actors better story better environment.

Why not, it's well made.
Wizard of Oz was nominated for Best Picture too.
Fortunately for LOTR fans, their movie didn't have a...Gone with the Wind in it's year to compete with.

I won't let you people ruin this movie for me like you do so many others.
I was afraid of this. Going with to much technology. Seriously I know I will enjoy the movie because the book was awesome. The only way I will hate it is if I keep coming on here and hearing the people try and trash it because that's what this board does.
If my Uncle had a vagina he would be my aunt.

Unfortunately, Azog, like all the orcs and goblins seen in The Hobbit, is a CGI character. Remember how formidable and scary the Uruk-hai were in the LOTR movies? It's because they were played by real actors in makeup and wielding actual weaponry, monsters who had a presence that CGI just can't recreate. The phoniness of these CG-heavy creatures makes The Hobbit feel as inorganic to LOTR as the prequels were to the original Star Wars films.

Hell yeah! I remember being so excited for that movie because my uncle was such a big fan of the books. He introduced me to the animated movies and I really loved those as a kid growing up. So when I found out they were making a live action movie of the trilogy, I followed production about as well as you could in 2000. I remember watching the reviews come in on Rotten Tomatoes. It was a critical darling from the start. That's why so many critics were upset when A Beautiful Mind beat it out for Best Picture at the Oscars that year.
