I don't know how obscure it is, but Clint Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima" is a good one.

Cheap Thrills (awesome, builds intensity)

Irreversible (don't actually watch, Blair Witch camera work, until the 9 minute rape scene, shot in complete clarity, backwards like "Memento", fascinating, horrible, subtitles but you don't need them)

Blue Ruin was awesome.

Maybe not too obscure, but Sing Street was the best movie I saw last year.
