I thought John Carter was a good movie.

Inside Llewyn Davis. Only made a little over 13mil. I know it wasn't destined to be big box office, but it is a typically great Coen Brothers effort. So many underlying themes + Isaac killed his role. Amazing.

I dont think limited release films should be considered box office failures.

Grandmas Boy

Grandma's Boy grossed $6 million against a $5 million budget during its theatrical run, however, it grossed more than $30 million in DVD sales.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World made less than $50 million world wide.
Arguably, Edgar Wright's best film.

Sadly true, but I've seen them all (finally caught The Ladykillers the other day). My favorite filmmakers.

John Carter was the first that came to mind.
I think Jesse James is balanced by the fact that it did get some Oscar noms, so the recognition was there. The population of people who would go see a nearly 3 hour meditative western is quite small.
I dragged part of my family to that and they hated me, Two fell asleep. But it was a, "I'm going to the movies you can come along with me if you want," kind of thing.
