On flip side I would characterize the Wax books and Warbreaker as awesome.
I haven't gotten my hands in the latest Wax book ("Bands of Mourning") yet, but I'll get to it in the near future. I enjoyed "Alloy of Law" a bit more than "Shadows of Self." I went through the it quickly and didn't struggle to stay into it, but it just seemed to be lacking something I couldn't put my finger on.
Just finished "Warbreaker" yesterday. Plenty of character progression in that one, and a good read as you say.
Have you read "Elantris" as well?

Chronicles of the Black Company compendium by Gken Cook is a great complete set that is set in a larger world of many more books. But that's a complete trilogy.
As mentioned, Night Angel and the Lightbringer books are good. Third Lightbringer is coming out soon. Fourth and final in a year and a half. Weeks is just fun and usually punctual.
The Gentlemen Bastards sequence is up to four books soon (out of a planned seven) and if poor Scott Lynch can conquer his depression and anxiety long enough to write, he actually cranks those books out.
Raven's Shadow is an amazing complete series by Anthony Ryan.
As for how to handle it: read other stuff in the interim. That's all I can say. Just have to wait it out.
ETA: Glen Wolfe's pretty damn good too. May check out his Book of the New Sun.

I haven't read that one or his Steelheart series, though the Steelheart ones are sitting on my kindle to read eventually.
I'd agree with Alloy being better than Shadows of self, Shadows is just slightly less of a complete book. Bands of Mourning will probably be my next read after the Adrian Tchaikovsky book I'm currently reading.

Great series, and the original trilogy makes for a good series on it's own.
Mark Lawrence is another good author in the gritty vein of Joe Abercrombie and Martin. He has one finished trilogy and another that will be finishing in June. Both have been very good.
LoveThatMoney, have you read John Gwynne's The Faithful and the fallen series?
Fairly new series I hadn't heard of until recently. One of the better series I've read in a while though.
