R.A. Salvatore: The Legend of Drizzt

I'm not too big into fantasy novels, but a friend told me to check these out.
Right now I'm on the Crystal Shard, about sixty pages in. Picking it up in a little bit to contine before sleep.
How good does this get? Is this a weaker entry being his first novel?
Are there other Salvatore series that are better than the Drizzt?
Any fantasy buffs opinions or advice is most welcome.
(I did read Salvatore's Star Wars book. Really enjoyed that one, but I am a huge Star Wars fan. And that book was bitter sweet at the end. One of the most shocking, brilliant endings I've ever read. )

The Cleric Quintet has a pretty big following. You might like that as well. Drizzt is generally his most famous work.
I've not read the Icewind Dale trilogy, but I did read the Dark Elf trilogy. It's essentially the Drizzt origin story. The first two books in the trilogy are some of the best fantasy fiction I've ever read. The third book is good, but it merely sets the stage for what you're reading now.

Dark Elf Trilogy is awesome. Still the most fun I may have ever had reading... only Raymond Feist Magician books have come close.

I could never get into the dungeons and dragons types of books. I never played the game and stories were just not engaging enough for me. I read one Drizzt book, I do not remember which one, and that was plenty for me. I prefer the high fantasy of Jordan and Martin.

Thinking about it, I am pretty sure Crystal Shard is the book I read. The only thing I remember from the book is he had two blades.

Salvatore does a great job with his characters.
Read the dark elf trilogy next. It sets up drizzts story. Then continue the icewind dale trilogy and so on. There are a lot of books.

I enjoy the series. I started with Dark Elf and liked it better than Icewind Dale. The series after that was good as well.

I've read the Icewind Dale trilogy twice and the Drizzt trilogy twice. Good stuff.
Some critics that the character seemed a little too overpowered/badass and there's too much Deus Ex Machina. But it's fantasy escapism so screw them and enjoy the ride.

Very much this.
The other books are good, but these were the best of the bunch.

How Drizzt has not become an icon of fantasy film or television is beyond me. Although I don't read much Salvatore, that character is a fantasy legend.
Certainly comparable to Fafhrd/Grey Mouser, Elric, even Strider - people who don't even read the books are aware of these characters.
Drizzt is probably the most suitable to be made into a James Bond-type franchise of a fantasy character - IMHO.
I guess the D&D licensing would be a sticking point, but G-d knows everybody could use the money. And with Avatar (not my cup of tea, but it is what it is) era technology, the characters could be rendered fairly realistically.

I had to respond to this thread. Good books.

Now that you've found the Movie/TV Board, kiss what you had left of a life goodbye.
