tl;dw:
Alot of brains, almost no heart to the story. The psychological implications of power and seduction are presented with amazing nuance, but there's not a single character to care about.

Technically brilliant, and you're lucky if you get to see it in 70mm.

Joaquin Phoenix acts his dick off. I never thought he was a bad actor per se, but my estimation of him grew immensely after this film.

PSH also good, but not as good as advertised imo.

For me this falls in the middle-to-bottom half of PSAs work. Dial back your expectations.

okay, see you guys later, I'll materialize and disappear again in around 4 months

lost interest when It became apparent they backed off the LRH/scientology parallel pretty far

On the nerd side, but after TWBB I'm probably more anxious for Greenwood's score than PSH's performance. I'm not getting my hopes too far in the stratos though, then I am disappoint.

Pretty much agree with this assessment.. Liked it, didn't love it. And Joaquin does "damaged" better than anyone I've ever seen..

Pretty much thought it was an exercise in pretentiousness. It's hard to not imagine PTA sitting back collecting buzz and checks and laughing about how people think this film is "brilliant" when it's far from it.

The story is a jumbled mess. To an extent, that is calculated and purposeful, but for the most part it just loses the audience. There are some truly horrendous cuts, one toward the end of the film that makes you think that PTA just got fed up with the story and said "to hell with it, let's just end this."

The acting is impressive, though not so amazing that it truly carries this jalopy of a story to rewatchability.

At the end of the film, so many loose ends remain untied that it makes me wonder just how much got left on the cutting room floor.

It is not a terrible movie by any stretch, but it misses the forest for the trees, IMHO.

Been looking forward to seeing this. Judging from your review, I might just wait until it comes out and not spend the money.

Still its PTA, so still probably better than most everything out there.

I heard "meadndering going nowhere" but powerful and visually striking...people thought Magnolia was meandering going nowhere and I really like that film.

I just saw it so I thought I would weigh in.

Loved the acting, had some great scenes.

It never came together for me, maybe it just went over my head. I like subtlety but that was like painting with an eyelash.

This is movie where people who think they are brilliant will love it because they pretend to understand what it was about then look down upon everyone else who didn't like it because they couldn't understand the deeper meaning. At least in Drive there was a fledged out plot and a climax.

Didn't hate it but definitely didn't like it much either.

My favorites were the first processing scene and the jail cell scene. Going out on a limb with those two, I know

I posted this in the other Master threa but here's my take.

I saw this past Sunday and enjoyed it. I do understand the complaints ITT though. This is a very "artsy" film that hinges on PHENOMENAL acting by JP & PSH. There were several scenes where I just sat back in awe at the acting chops these guys brought to the film.

The movie is billed as this huge stab at Scientology and while that is a part of the film it's better to go into it viewing that as background to the story of the life of Freddie Quill with regards to his relationship to the Master. The relationship between these two characters is so unlikely when you put this supposed intellectual with someone barely hanging onto their sanity but that really reveals how alike they are but one is the leader of this huge cultist movement while the other is a societal outcast.

JMO. I really liked it. Not a great movie but very visually appealing with strong acting.

They are already dialed back before this review.

Would have been better off making a pure scientology LRH biopic and pulling no punches
